Current NEX-7 owner underwhelmed by new a6000

After years since the NEX-7, I expected more.

No claims whatsover for better lower light sensitivity, a MUCH lower rez EVF, fewer dials, same resolution for stills, and a generally comparable feature set to the older models.

Newer? Certainly !!    Better?  Meh !!

Sounds like you disagree with my premise. Care to elaborate?

5R and 6 owner here. Even though the rumors were saying the a6000 was a NEX-6/7 replacement this really seems like just a 6 replacement. I don't even see it as that, more like a lateral move. I do lots of low light and video and don't want any more megapixels. This is also missing the mic port that the NEX-7 had.

The major update is fast AF. It's not a NEX-7 direct upgrade. However, SONY finally nailed it with AF.

I would simply say that if you use Sony products, what more did you expect? Sony's model upgrade schedule is pretty easy to figure out. Similar form factor with a new sensor that has OSPDAF. Beyond that you toss in the NFC/Wifi/USB charging upgrades and it is what it is. At least in this case they gave it the new version of the N7's sensor, which is a win and the price is pretty nice. IMO the true N7 upgrade will be a lower end FF, but I still figure most will be disappointed. Sony's model upgrades generally are somewhat underwhelming.

Sorry, was just joking.

You made some good points, but I guess like any of the other recent "updates" to the 3 and 5 that it's just more of the same so I guess I have lower expectations of a Sony update.

Unless you need the AF, I don't see a lot in it either.

Re: Current NEX-7 owner underwhelmed by new a6000

But is this a camera designed designed for the current Nex 7 user ? It will be a good update for those with a Nex 5 looking for something more for not a great deal of money.

Not a camera for long heavy lenses but how many photographers in its intended target audience will use more than something like the 55 - 210 zoom ? No one puts anything over 135mm on a Leica so it is probably expecting too much from Sony.

I am more interested in the internal bits and pieces and how they might play out in a new A7x SLT or a APS sensor version of the A7.

Can you imagine what the impact will be trying to sell the higher end NEX7 & NEX6' 's on the used market?

Who the heck will buy them?

It is a NEX-6 replacement camera. But why is the EVF's bit-rate smaller than the NEX-6's?

Well, here is where I disagree. The NEX-7 owner looks at this new model and sees as many downgrades as upgrades. The hybrid AF systems could more properly be called "hyped AF systems" based on extremely recent evidence from prior NEX models. Has Sony suddenly discovered a breakthrough 'world's fastest AF" or has the marketing department had another chest-thumping session? Time will tell.

IMHO, the NEX-7 will continue to be recognized in the used market as a great camera, and the a6000 hardly offers a better choice.

Those of us who prefer APS-C have yet to see a worthy succesor to the NEX-7. Perhaps an a7000 is in the pipeline?

Consider it as a Nex-6 upgrade - it looks pretty decent then, does it not?

The a7000 is still coming, before the end of the year.

But if the a6000 has AF/MF lock and video mic port, who would need a a7000?

I am glad that this model puts and end to these endless AF debates....

Because Sony says it's fast ?  With the 16-50 PZ lens ?  In good lighting ?  When it can track ski jumpers and hockey players and kids on a swing set with the tele zooms, maybe the debate will end.  I'm not saying it can't ... would be a nice option for everyone ... just saying that a lot of cameras have claimed fast AF in the past.

personally

as a very happy NEX-7 owner I see the A6000 as a very possible second body. don't care about faster AF, but at the price it is much lower and it should have pretty much the same image quality as my 7

of course I will wait until the real tests are in

Who cares?

As long as it is faster than the EM-1 & EM-10, it will reduce the post count by hundreds of futile posts every week in here

What can they boast about now: that they have the smallest sensor with the smallest lenses?

Good going...

I am so NOT impressed as a current NEX-7 owner. Hoping to see what is next that is more comparable equal to or better than the NEX-7. Otherwise, I may just buy another NEX-7. For my environmental photography work, it simply rocks.

From the feature set, it's clearly a superior camera to the NEX 7 in almost every way, and for only $648 !
