Any advice on photo-hosting services?

Hi all,

I'm looking for web service that would give me a nice site to present photos.

I'd like the site to be both "blog like" (so that I can post on-going photos to keep it ifresh) and also organize them into "galleries." It should work on computers and mobiles, and make it easy to share via social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.)

Most services I've found seem to be either blog-like or gallery-like.

I also looked at a few sites that offer shopping carts to sell prints -- but those wind up feeling a bit, well, not-so-classy -- so I don't think I'll need that sort of service.

Lastly, I'd like to be able to use my own domain and not have it feel too much in the style of the hosting service (for example, Tumblr sites feel very Tumblr-oriented to me).

Any suggestions?

http://www.smugmug.com will give you all the requirements you're asking for and more.

Very customizable, easy to setup with a large support community and excellent customer service.

No affiliation, just a very happy SmugMug customer.

Cheers

I looked at Smugmug -- and unless I missed it, it didn't see to have the "blog" like component.

You could make galleries, yes -- but if you want to post a new photo every few days, like a blog, it didn't really seem to work well for that. Or did I miss something?

In the gallery customizations you can have a Blog style gallery with text boxes and can set it up anyway you'd like either with templates or designing your own style including making custom templates. It's all drag and drop, similar to how a Mac is.

I would suggest checking out this forum, everything you want to know about smugmug you can find here or ask folks who know more about this specific service.

Thanks, I'll check out dgrin.

Do you happen to know of any Smugmug sites that use that sort of part-blog/part-gallery approach?

Have you looked at Exposure? I fiddled with it just one day, but this is what I created: https://jayhawk.exposure.so/background

I doubt I do anything more with it, but it was easy enough and I certainly didn't fiddle with all of the customizations, but you may like what they offer.

ipernity.com

You can post/host just about any file type, gallery's, albums... No built in blog, but great for hosting files for it.

Is Smugmug still appealing if you don't want them to sell prints for you?

Or is the appeal of Smugmug more rooted in the whole e-commerce thing?

Take a look at Zenfolio where I have posted images for a few years.

Yes, Zenfolio can be set up as a simple site to display your work or as a commerce site where you can charge as little or as much as you want for prints.

I've used pbase.com, zenfolio.com, and now I'm using Flickr.

Just like with a camera, you have to try it out sometimes to see what fits you.

I love WordPress but I also have a Zenfolio site.

I'm trying to think about whether WordPress might be a good option for you. You may be able to do what you want with a portfolio type of theme like this one: http://www.themeskingdom.com/demo/elevation/

You'd have to buy hosting separately to do that, of course.

Or I set up this very simple site for a friend by creating a child theme for the basic Twenty Twelve theme.  But you can use WordPress galleries with a light box plugin if you didn't want slideshows: http://sarasmilephotos.com/

I suppose it depends on whether you need something that works out of the box.
