My Turf...Everglades National Park
7

Its winter time at Everglades National Park... low water, lots of birds and gators. Birds migrate and mate. They build nest and have little chicks which creates fast food for the gators. Gator mating begins in April, so let the fun begin....

I used my 7D and 100-400mmIS. I also used my Nokia 1020 for the wide pics...

2000ISO, f/13, 1/1000sec. at 400mm

800ISO, f/10, 1/640sec. at 250mm

Very nice indeed, mailman.  I love your bird pics, and the Nokia did a good job for the wide angle shots.  I used to live in Fla, up in Satellite Beach, for a few years and Fla is a great and beautiful place to live.  You are lucky to live there.

Very nice sharp images. That lens works rather well with the 7D. Just wish my wallet was a bit bigger.

Re: My Turf...Everglades National Park

I think my 7D sharpness is due to my AF settings. I've played around with the AF setting and I get different results when I do. I have AF settings for static pics and different AF settings for BIF's

The key to the 7D is understanding how C. Fn III works.

Nice captures! Was this shark Valley? Or where could I get this close?

Re: My Turf...Everglades National Park

Nice shots, mailman.  Every time I see your posts using the 100-400, I start thinking about picking up this lens for my 7D.

You may have mentioned it elsewhere, but what are you doing in post?

Just curious why you don't drop the iso for sharpness and open aperture for shallower DOF

Re: My Turf...Everglades National Park

Good point...but I love the challenge. When I shoot close-up, I want my subject totally in focus.

I love f/8 with my 100-400mm, then only eyes are focused and the rest of the body is not.

I like pushing the limits when I shoot my 7D...Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

Re: My Turf...Everglades National Park

I got a National Park pass. From January to May, I'm in photography paradise.

Can you imagine....sittings with a 600mm for hours, waiting for that million dollar shot!

At Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park, the pro's are there waiting for it.

Here's the set-up....600mm lens focused on a birds nest about 2 feet from the surface of the water. The nest has a juvenvile chick in it. A gator leaps straight-up out of the water and grabs the chick out of the nest. Oh yes, its a money shot and the pro's are here....

We'll I'm not going to argue with the sharpness.  It's insane (at 1600 no less!).  I can only really afford one zoom and I am tempted to ditch my 70-200 F4 IS and get the 100-400 based on results like I am seeing here.  I always thought the 70-200's were a little sharper, but this has me thinking...  Are these results typical for this lens?

Absolutely.  Here's a random one I pulled out of my gallery taken with that lens.  It's quite sharp, though still a bit short of what a 400 prime can do.  I've been quite happy with it.  BTW, your 70-200 f/4 is one of the sharper zooms that Canon makes, though it's a bit short for wildlife, as I'm sure you know.  The f/2.8 version, while pretty heavy, can be nicely paired with a 2x extender at the expense of a stop or two (can't recall) and give you the best of both worlds.

Don't ditch your 70-200 f4 IS....but try to get the 100-400mm. My 100-400mm has done me well and I get sharp pics most of the time.

Here's a few from my 50D and the same 100-400mm lens
