E-M5 firmware 2.0: Mysets on Mode dial?
4

Has anyone checked the new E-M5 firmware 2.0 to see if Mysets can be programmed onto the Mode dial like on the E-M1, E-M10, E-P5, etc.?

No, not possible. Not even the flicker reduction menu, which takes care of the "rattlesnake", like on my E-PM2.

No, I don't see a change in the dial settings.

Might not be possible

those positions may be 'hard wired' on the E-M5

I wouldn't mind seeing a MySets control tab in the SCP

Nothing is hard wired, it would all be done by firmware. So it would be possible to add the MySets feature to any camera with a dial.... but.... firmware space limitations, cost of reworking the firmware, loss of sales on newer bodies, marketing and sales going tut, tut! would all conspire to see that not too many nice things are added to an old camera.

Far more important would be to have more MySets (12 would be nice), being able to name them and be able to save and restore them to card or PC. I can do that with my Casio pocket camera, why can't a "better" camera do it?

Definitely gets my vote! Even 8 would be twice as good (which I seem to remember was what my 2003 Olympus C5050 had).

Naming would be fantastic - one of mine is for underwater use, but I only get one diving trip most years so struggle to remember where I put it

Updated to 2.0 today

I updated to 2.0 today and enabled the smaller central AF spot. It sure would be nice if the Mysets could be put on the mode dial though.

Has anyone discovered any changes in 2.0 other than what Olympus told us about?

I second having more MySets and being able to name them. I would even settle for the option to assign a button to enter a MySet selection mode, where a quick spin of a dial would choose one, and pressing the button again would make it active.

Unless I am missing something, it seems like the MySet button assignment only changes the settings while held down (and then for only one MySet), and I have enough trouble with the small buttons already so shooting with one held down is not easy.

Since it seems the E-M5 will remain current for at least another 6 months, it is shameful that the E-M10 has this feature, given that its target market is less likely to use MySets than users of the E-M5.

Let's hope 2.1 is in the works...

My guess is no way it would happen.

Olympus, after all, is in business to sell cameras, so if you want the rather excellent MySets to Mode dial feature then you buy the camera that has that feature (E-PL5, E-PL6, E-P5, E-M1, E-M10).

The E-M5 is now 2 years old (announced 8 Feb 2012) so is truly past tense in digital camera land.

I can see a rationale like this:

The OM-D represents Oly's enthusiast to pro product line, where these users can and should expect more than retail-level support from Olympus. These users will appreciate their cameras being keep current where it is possible, and will buy new models when significant new features come along, but may also keep the old model as a backup. Knowing that Oly will still offer some level of support beyond two years for that old model goes a long way to creating security for these users who may have invested a lot in the MFT system.

I wonder how many of the crowd who invested in the FT system Oly lost during the long wait for the OM-D, and then discovered most of their fancy FT glass doesn't focus worth a damn on the OM-D? But the OM-D appears to have been very successful, and has presumably garnered some new Oly users, so Oly should do what it takes to keep them. Keeping a customer is a whole lot easier than finding a new one.

I have spent my career working with I.T. enterprise level products with outstanding service, to the point that I will not even consider companies that fail to live up to this standard. I can get 24x7x365 support on a wide range of products that are sometimes more than 10 years old. I can and have called Cisco, APC, Dell and others and received support (often at no cost) for their products long past the warranty period. (yes, there is computer gear that isn't garbage after 3 years...) These companies provide this because they know how hard it is to win a customer back if they lose them.

I have no idea if this level of support exists in the camera world (I suspect it does), but if I were a Pro with tens of thousands invested in a system, I would be looking for a company that supports me in the long run.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: E-M5 firmware 2.0: Mysets on Mode dial?

When I return to my E-M5, I have forgotten which Myset I have chosen. It would be useful, for me, if the chosen Myset was highlighted or had a dot next to it!

Re: E-M5 firmware 2.0: Mysets on Mode dial?

The E-M10, E-M10II, PEN-F, E-P5, E-M5II, etc. can do it.  Great!  Then the E-M10III and E-M5III can't.
