Why does Canon not make such light zoom lenses anymore ?

I too have old primes (older than your 50mm), which can deliver nice results, and yet I do know that the slow zooms of the past in general were soft and had a lack of contrast.

I completely agree - by way of example I have a 50/1.8 MkI bought in 1990-ish which still cuts the mustard today, and my original 100/2.8 macro was optically superb (though the AF was dire). But my relatively expensive 35-135 USM from the same era is nowhere near the same image quality as today's designs.

28-55 f/3.5-4.5?

Anyone would buy it?

Seriously?

I wouldn't consider it even if it'd be the best zoom on a market.

I  think even the 6D is around 3x too expensive for anyone considering it to put a cheap lens on the front just to reduce weight. When a FF rebel exists (at a rebel price point) then maybe we'll see such a lens.  Old, light ff lenses are easily available used and are cheap too because nobody wants them anymore so why make a new one with substandard quality.

You are probably correct on that.

To the original poster, I have the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 II USM lens and use it on my 5D (the first 5D).  While I think it's a little soft for sweeping landscapes, it is a superb portrait lens.  Used ones in excellent condition can be had for about $250.  Also, if you are looking for a Canon hood for that lens, it uses the same hood as the Canon 28mm f1.8 USM lens.

What the OP is referring to is a very limited range zoom at a slow aperture, so of course it was going to be small and either for the poor or those with very limited needs. Nowadays they can make wider range zooms for the same kind of quality, and probably better too.

Try selling a new 28-55 f3.5-4.5 nowadays! It only goes from standard wide to normal perspective. I don't see it happening. Things have moved on, and the 18-55 cheapo on crop format is a spiritual descendant.

They used to, back in the film days. The 24-85, 28-105 come to mind. Pretty good glass with USM focusing.

I think Canon got away from these designs in the digital age because they were 'consumer lenses'     and Canon assumes that if you buy a FF digital body then you will naturally want to hang their professional 'L' lenses on it.

If you want lightweight consumer lenses they still make a variety to choose from, they are just designed for their 'consumer' crop bodies.

The only current consumer FF normal zoom is the 28-135 IS, a good lens, but not exactly a lightweight.

As others have said, most people buying full frame want to put good glass on it, at least partly because of the cost of the camera.

Crop sensor cameras are the new cheap cameras, with light cheap lenses.

Even Tamron and Sigma are getting away from light cheap full frame lenses (i.e. "Art" line, etc).

I keep my old rebel and a cheap lens just for the purpose you are describing, and keep good glass on the 6D.
