D800 autofocus problems with 2x teleconverter

I have a Nikon D800 and having no luck with focus when using a 2x teleconverter. I've tried both Sigma and Tamron 2x teleconverters on the following lenses. Sigma 70-200 2.8 (non OS version), Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC version, Sigma 120-300 2.8 (non OS version), Sigma 150mm 2.8 macro (non OS version). It will never lock focus, it just pumps back and forth forever hunting. They all work fine without the 2x. My older D300 worked fine with all of these combinations. Any suggestions?

Re: D800 autofocus problems with 2x teleconverter

I had an issue with my Sigma 180mm macro lens and it transpired it was the lens software which Sigma said could not be made compatible with the d800 on the older lenses.

might be worth giving them a call, Sigma UK were very helpful to me.

Re: D800 autofocus problems with 2x teleconverter

It is not rare for there to be an AF issue using some independent lenses etc on recent camera bodies.

Usually the solution is to get the independent lenses re chipped with new electronics. Some older items cannot be re chipped.

My similar Nikon lenses and converters autofocus fine.

Great images are often of good subjects.
If they are great images does what lens, body or technique was used matter more than the skill of the photographer?

Re: D800 autofocus problems with 2x teleconverter

I have exactly the same problem with the 2x teleconverter using a NIKON D800 and a 300 mm 1:4 D.  Focus does not lock.  However, I have better luck with the 1.4x teleconverter. I will appreciate to know why the 2x does not focus.

Hi.

One reason might be, that your 300mm f:4 becomes a 600mm f:8 - which makes the AF system (and the metering system) unstable.

Yeah... buy a D850. 2x converters barely work with cameras that are really good at AF. A D800 is only passably good at AF.

Using a tc 2.0 converter on an f4.0 lens will make the auto focus slow and unstable.  I sold my tc 2.0 long ago.  The 2.0 converter will work better on an f2.8 lens.

Re: D800 autofocus problems with 2x teleconverter

At f8 only the central autofocus points work. Perhaps this could be the problem for some who are having difficulty. I would also expect autofocus at f8 to be somewhat problematic in low light.
