Buying new lens 17-40 or else?

I've seen so many reviews on lenses and lost any hope of committing which one to get.

Ideally I want lens that's good for everything but those do not exist. This is why I need your help picking something that works best for me. I would like lens to be able to take landscapes, some night shots something that can take on vacations (walk around lens) defiantly want wide angle lens. This is why 17-40L is something I’ve been looking at for a long time. However then, I came across 16-35 2.8L II, 17-55 f2.8 IS and EF 20mm 2.8 USM

Right now I have Canon T1i with 50mm 1.8 prime and two kit lenses 18-55 and 55-250. Since T1i is getting old I've been thinking about getting Canon EOS 70D (later this year, which most likely I’ll get with kit lens 18-135). But that’s in the future. I want to get new lens that I can take on upcoming vacation (in 2 weeks).

Can you please suggest what best to take that won’t be an overkill on T1i or 70D.

Please help!

EF 17-40 f/4L USM is sub-optimal on "crop" bodies like your T1i and anticipated 70D. You can get greater zoom range, greater max. aperture, and IS in EF-S lenses and similar from Sigma (DC) and Tamron (Di II).

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II VC

Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 DC HSM is getting really great reviews, nearly the same zoom range but over 2 stops greater max aperture than the 17-40L.

For "do everything" lenses for general use and travel, take a good long look at the EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM or EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.

efs 18-135 is stm is the lens you want for that purpose on crop camera.

I have full frame and crop cameras and ef 17-40 is better suited for full frame.

I love my 18-135 is stm on crop. excellent image quality throughout range.

To OP..... I agree with Lemming51 but would suggest getting the Canon 10-22mm since you will be getting the 18-135 STM with your new 70D. These 2 lenses compliment each other and are both outstanding lenses. The 10-22mm is wicked good.

You will save $200 on the 18-135 lens if you wait to buy it as a kit lens with the 70D.

I used a 17~40 on a crop body (20D) before there were good alternatives available. And yes, you can produce perfectly satisfactory images with it. But there are now far better choices for crop factor use, like the EF-S 17~55/2.8 and the EF-S 15~85. The 17~40 does best what it was designed for, as an ultra-wide zoom on FF, which is how I now use it.

Re: Buying new lens 17-40 or else?

I used the 17-40 on a crop sensor and really liked it.  As others have said, there are more options now with f/2.8 and image stabilization.  It's a good lens, but probably not the best pick for the $$$.

However, if you do choose to get it I think you'd be satisfied with the results.

Re: Buying new lens 17-40 or else?

I use the 17-40 and the 24-105 on crop bodies. The 17-40 is an excellent lens on crop. However, it is not fast at F4,  and you would need a faster lens for low light. It has great color, contrast, and resistance to flare. I use the zooms outside, most of the time. I use fast primes for indoor photos without flash (35F2IS), but if you want a zoom for this and don't mind the size and weight, the Canon 17-55IS is good for general use. The 17-55IS is the size and weight of the 24-105 (it is longer but 1 oz lighter) but gives you IS, F 2.8 and good AF in low light.

I've tried a few sigma and tamron lenses and to me they all have focusing issues on T1i, or it could be that my T1i refuses to shoot with those after L lenses. F2.8 sounds very intriguing however for now, I dont even want to consider anything else but Canon lenses.

EF-S 17-55 f2.8, is it that different from 18-55? Most of the time I'll be shooting at F11, does it make sense to get EF20 2.8 for my night shoot fix?

What is your current walk around lens ?

Re: Buying new lens 17-40 or else?

With what you have , the 10-22 - as a walk around depends on where you are walking .

The 15-85 is another for walking .

As far as upgrading your camera , make sure the new one does what you want need . ISO 12500 or 1/8000 is worthless to most of us . Better AF , burst . live view etc - things you will use .

nobody is saying the 17-40 is 'bad' for crop they are just saying there are more 'optimal' choices. Why would you want to use a 17-40 on a crop camera when there are better choices for the same amount of money? The 17-40 with its large image-circle is designed for FF where-as the other lenses are not. (ie the 15-85, 17-55, 18-135, etc)    You can certainly use the 17-40 on crop but again, there are better choices for the same price and IQ.

FYI...... I do indeed own the 17-40 but use it on FF.  I also use the 15-85 and 10-22 on my 7D.

Short answer is "else". The 17-40 wasn't extremely shart on my crop body. For the vacation you need a possibly "long" zoom - so you don't need to change lenses continously which can be very odd walking on the street.

The 17 40 is to short on the long end.

If yu don't need a very fast lens (i.e. f2.8) then I would definiteely go for the 18 135 stm which is reasonably sharp and long enough. A good compromiss would be the Sigma 17 70 f2.8-4 "C" which is a very sharp lens, but only "half" so long than the previous one, however it is twice as fast.

At the end you have to decide what is more important to you (reach: long zoom or that the lens ist fast: aperture).

Re: Buying new lens 17-40 or else?

I think you have a great setup for travel. Depending on where you're going and how long you stay, you might want to leave the 50mm behind. You cross that focal length twice, or nearly twice with the 55-250. The only thing you'll gain with the 17-40 is low light performance and getting that (faster than f4) gets very expensive in a zoom. I would wait to put more money into a faster zoom until you know for certain what camera comes next. (The camera business has been pretty dynamic of late with new models available with more features and lower prices coming pretty much constantly.)

If I were in your position, I would consider getting a fun lens like a Samyang 8mm fisheye.

Here is the proof that there are better lenses for the same price. On a crop body the 17-40 is not sharper than the 15-85. The proof is in the test chart I linked. The OP is not talking about FF options like you suggest in your reply. FF is a game changer regarding the 17-40. Not only is the 15-85 sharper, it is much wider and longer in focal length AND the same price.

Yes. EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, has fast/silent ring-USM af drive with full-time manual focus override, non-rotating front barrel, f/2.8 max aperture throughout the zoom range, and decent build quality with metal mount and focus distance scale.  It is significantly larger/heavier than the 18-55.

Assuming you have the EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS: cheap plastic build, conventional af motor, barrel rotates with focus.  But pretty decent optical performance.

Most of the time I'll be shooting at F11, does it make sense to get EF20 2.8 for my night shoot fix?

At f/11 you're not going to see any significant difference between the 18-55 and any prime at the same focal length.

What is your current walk around lens ?

EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

i would disagree with you and the ones who have the same opinion here are a couple of galleries that are taken entirely with 17-40mm f4/40D. i am not sure even if you have or used the 17-40 mm f4:

I used a 17~40 on a crop body (20D) before there were good alternatives available. And yes, you can produce perfectly satisfactory images with it. But there are now far better choices for crop factor use, like the EF-S 17~55/2.8 and the EF-S 15~85. The 17~40 does best what it was designed for, as an ultra-wide zoom on FF, which is how I now use it.

appreciate your opinion but you haven't presented any evidence to substantiate your allegation yes, i understand that there are better lenses than 17-40mm f4, 24-70mm f2.8ll for example, but at a very high price! ef-s 17-55 f2.8 is a very good lens optically, however, it does't have the "L" build of the 17-40 f4, it is more expensive, it cannot be used with FF cameras, and it collects dust like a vacuum cleaner inside the optical elements! it takes a while to understand the weaknesses and strong points of the ef 17-40 f4, i remember i hated it in the beginning, now, it is one of my favorites and i strongly recommend it to everyone interested

Here is the proof that there are better lenses for the same price. On a crop body the 17-40 is not sharper than the 15-85. The proof is in the test chart I linked. The OP is not talking about FF options like you suggest in your reply. FF is a game changer regarding the 17-40. Not only is the 15-85 sharper, it is much wider and longer in focal length AND the same price.

regarding charts, i hardly noticed any difference. i till think it would be far better if you post some photos to substantiate your point, no more "charts". you can see the photos posted in my link which proves your point moot

If you noticed no difference then your argument that the 17-40 is better is invalid. Thank you for arguing my case. It was my pleasure. Regarding your photos, once again, NOBODY is saying you can't take good photos with the 17-40. Others, including yourself, are saying the 2 lenses are at least equal in IQ. What is your argument anyways? We are on the same page regarding IQ.

Are you going to argue that the 17-40 resolves the same detail FF vs Crop also? Take a look at the comparison while you are waiting for my images from the 2 lenses.

Re: Buying new lens 17-40 or else?

I had a Canon 5DII with a 17-40mm L lens which got stolen In Spain on a recent overseas trip. This was a brilliant combination ideal for all the shots you want to do. Because I had a back-up 7D at home I tried to match the results with a 10-22mm Canon lens which I bought on ebay. Although good, just not the same. So I thought about adding a new 17-40mm to my 7D but all the reviews and youtube vids said no! From what I've read, I think the consensus is to add the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8IS which is ideally suited to a crop-frame camera.

cheers,

peter
