Re: Sydney Botanical Gardens

Hi Walgarch,

Glad you are enjoying the camera and the Gardens. You got some nice shots here with a pleasing DOF in the flowers and with the Kookaburra. the composition of the frangipanis is nice too. Generally I think you could crop a tad tighter. Was it a cloudy day? I wonder if you need to up the brightness in post-processing a little.

cheers

Some suggestions for PP ...............

As others have said, perhaps some tighter cropping could improve things. Also sometimes you can give things - flowers particularly - a bit more "pop".

Tighter cropping and a little sharpening - also would bring out the background colour

Crop just a little and brighten it up some.

Every image can be processed in many different ways. It's your choice. These are just a couple of suggestions but no one opinion is "right". It's all a matter of taste.

Re: Sydney Botanical Gardens

Cheers Adam! The first three were done on a cloudy day so they're a little duller. I've generally been terrible with getting the correct exposure, so I'll try those out with a higher setting. I'll also try out different crops and see what fits.

Thanks,
Will

Re: Some suggestions for PP ...............

Cheers Mike! Actually I would agree. I think bringing out the colours does help quite a bit. Traditionally I've been trying to achieve a look that was similar to how the subject was as I saw it, but the pop of colour is what that shot needed.

For the Kookaburra photo I was going for rule of thirds, with the background as negative space, but frankly the background on the shot is a bit boring. Cropping might be the way to go here so I'll give that a try.

Thanks,
Will

As I said, there are many ways to process an image - it all comes down to personal taste. And ultimately you are the one who has to be happy with your images.

I was in the botanical gardens in Sydney a couple of weeks ago with my wife. It's interesting to see what sort of images you saw and took compared to mine. I didn't see any kookaburras for a start!!

Had a look at your Flickr site. Some nice images there.

It was a rare occurrence for me too. That shot was taken at the birdbath in the herb garden area behind the Conservatorium of Music. I got lucky that the Kookaburra wanted to use the birdbath at the time!

Had a look at your Flickr site. Some nice images there.

Thank man!

Re: Sydney Botanical Gardens

Just popping in to say I like these images. In general, I agree with some of the suggestions for enhancing them a bit but they're pleasant to look at. Though I've heard about kookaburras before, I've never seen one until your photo.

Thanks for expanding my world, and thanks for posting.
