VSCO 4 profiles for Olympus E-M1/5 (pictures)
4

VSCO Film profiles have updated their profiles for the E-M1. Now they have custom Olympus profiles for The E-M1, E-M5, E-P5, E-P3 and Stylus1.

They work very nicely in LR 4 and 5 to simulate analog films. I got the VSCO 4 because it simulates 2 of my favortie slides : Fuji Velvia and Provia.

Here are some pics taken last year with the E-M1, processed with LR 5 and VSCO profiles

Fuji Velvia 50

Fuji Velvia 50

Fuji Velvia 100

Fuji Provia 100F

Kodak E100VS

Fuji Fortia SP

What do you think?

Note. If you are interested, they have a promo now.

Re: Here it is

white balance of the VSCO profile looks off to me - too far into the cool temp. Here's a quick 15 second adjustment of your original in Photoshop. FYI, your original's color space is Adobe RGB, and you'd do better to reassign to sRGB before posting to the web as Adobe RGB colors look washed out on the web.

first one is my re-do, second is your VSCO version.

Like and use them

I think they work great. Keep in mind when asking about images with and without that ALL images use a color profile. There are big differences between the Normal, Muted, Vivid, and Portrait profiles that you use to get OOC images. Consequently the comparisons are not between the Olympus profile and the VSCO profile.

Here is a shot from last week. It's sort of the opposite end of the temperature spectrum, which should give an idea how it works with a different color palette. This one was done using Velvia but I use Astia more than the Velvia. To get an idea how this works, the Velvia profile pumps the hue and saturation of the reds by 10%, pumps the hue of the green by 10% but knocks the saturation down by 10%, and then cuts the hue of the blues by 10% and pumps the saturation by 30%.

Re: Here it is

some people (not me necessarily) prefer that snow be white instead of reflected blue from the sky, so here's yet another version processed that way.

The goal of VSCO is to give a certain look similar to films or slides. Velvia was a very saturated slide film, thus giving an unnatural look, but very specific.

Of course I can process pictures to be "true to life", with correct WB and all. But the fun of VSCO profiles is to give a specific look.

I re checked, the pictures are in sRGB profile.

Nice try. But it would have been polite if you asked for permission befor editing.

No problem, Im not offended at all. Of course I like comments and critiques. But it's always nice to ask permission before using other's people work

Anyway, I like your second try, you did it well with the snow.

But the goal of this thread was not "How can I process my files to be the most realistic". I wrote it to show the effects of VSCO profiles.

No problems, have a nice day!

Nice image Don, I like the way it looks!

I think VSCO profiles are pretty cool and close to the original film they tend to emulate. But the nice thing with digital is that we can tweak it to our taste with infinite variations.

I shot many Provia rolls many years ago, and I'm happy to find that look on some of my digital pictures. But of course, it's not to everyone's taste.

I've tried tried quite a lot of emulation profiles, but VSCO are the most satisfying IMHO. Not cheap at all, but the results are great. DXO is kown to make good emulation profiles too, but to be used with their software, that rules out all LR users.

More presets but you could say they are profiles.

One drawback to the Velvia Profile

is that it can introduce grain (noise) in areas of one color. Like the sky. You should be able to see this in the following shot although the upload can make the image funky. It won't show up in a print, few people would notice, and fewer would care, but if you pixel peep then it might give you cardiac arrest.

I like 'em a lot

I've posted about the VSCO profiles several times on this forum - when they have sales, introduce new film packs or add support for Olympus cameras to existing packs. There are currently 4 packs of VSCO film presets, and support for Olympus cameras has been added to all but the 1st one. I expect and hope that they'll add support to the remaining pack in the near future.

I was first turned on to VSCO by this set of (E-M5 + 45mm f/1.8 and 12-35mm f/2.8) images taken in Sri Lanka. VSCO sort of fell off my radar for a while after that, but I jumped on a sale a few months later, then ended up buying all 4 sets. I admit, I don't really have an eye for fine-tuning colors, white balance, clarity, saturation, etc., and the VSCO film packs allow me to try a bunch of different looks quickly.

Most of the images I've uploaded to my gallery over the past 8 months have had VSCO presets applied to them.

I like 'em. I feel that they help me save time processing my images, and allow me to easily give an attractive and relatively uniform look on an entire set of images quickly.

A few examples from my gallery:

I have also used and liked the DXO film emulation packs, but found the DXO Pro interface to be way too clunky in comparison to LightRoom (which is by no means perfect), and I found it to be too much trouble to perform most of my editing in LightRoom, then export to DXO for final touches, including applying film emulations. VSCO film emulation presets yield results that I like, all without having to leave LightRoom.

They're more than profiles

There are currently 4 separate VSCO film packs, and all but one of those contain profiles for Olympus cameras. If you choose to apply an emulation preset to a photo, a custom profile will be applied to that photo as part of the preset.

In that sense, they're more than profiles. They're complex presets that almost always contain custom profiles and often also contain custom tone curves, in addition to a myriad of other settings.
