Does Nvidia 3D Functionality Work with Any 3D TV?

Howdy,

I've had a Fuji W3D for years (And assorted Loreos before that, all the way back to the early 1990s), and I'm finally getting around to setting up a 3D monitor. My brother gave me his Sony PS3 monitor, and although it's far from perfect, I think it could be usable.

I was able to get the monitor to display 3D photos and videos with the Fuji connected directly via HDMI. So far so good.

Then I attached the HDMI cable from the PS3 to my Lenovo laptop. I was hoping to display W3D content in the Fuji MyFinePix Studio. No luck. Looks like either the laptop or the app can't make the PS3 monitor recognize any 3D content. Not really surprising, for a laptop I guess.

Then I tried to see if my desktop machine could handle 3D. It's a homebuilt based on a Core2Quad with 8G of RAM, and for a video card, an Nvidia GeForce 9600GT. That card is old enough that Nvidia doesn't directly list whether or not it can support their "3D Vision 2" spec or not. I see them trying to sell their own Nvidia 3D glasses and so forth, and they never mention the PS3 monitor in their list of supported equipment.

So my question is, what do I need to make the PS3 display MPO pics and 3D movies? If I attach the PS3 monitor to my desktop, will it work as-is, or do I need to buy Nvidia glasses?

Thanks for any help.

I don't have the PS3 monitor, but from what I've read it is 3D shutter technology, ala Nvidia, but it's not stated specifically. I'm not sure how you got the Fuji W3 to work directly with the monitor. There would have to be video card computing technology between the Fuji and the monitor for it to work. Did you mean you connected the Fuji to the PS3 console, which was connected to the monitor?

As for the Lenova and the 9600GT card. It does support 3D vision as far as I know, BUT you need 3D vision software, which you can purchase from the nvidia website for about $50. You also need to go into the video card setup and turn on 3D on the card. That should do it.

Thanks for the info. $50 seems like a lot of money just to enable 3D functions, but I guess there really isn't a way around that.

In my initial setup with the camera, I plugged a cable with a mini HDMI connector into the W3, then plugged the other end of the cable, with a regular HDMI connector, directly into the PS3 monitor. Worked pretty well. The monitor even auto detected the type of 3D signals it was getting. I don't own a PS3 machine; just that 3D monitor.

I'm sure there are better 3D displays out there, but as I didn't have to pay my brother anything for it, I couldn't argue with the price. So I guess I shouldn't worry about the $50 for the 3D Vision s/w.

The more I think about this, your monitor probably recognizes side-by-side 3D images, and I think the W3 sends out a side-by-side image created from an MPO file. 3D Vision is needed for Frame Sequential (ala bluray 3D). If you have other 3D images you want to see, you might try creating MPO files from them. Stereomaker is good for that--download from here: http://www.stereomaker.net/eng/index.html  You can enter a right and left image from your Loreo and create an MPO file. Then save the MPO file to your W3 card and see if you can bring it up on the monitor.

Nvidia is telling me that they don't support 3D Vision with that monitor. It's really frustrating - their little setup routine works, and when I run their test animation, it looks great, in 3D through the glasses. But, I can't find any sort of app that will attempt to send an MPO image to the monitor in 3D. I have all elements I need, except for that.

Look up tridef.com. They have an app that should work for you.

Yep. Tried it and it worked! I'm thinking of going and getting an ATI GPU tomorrow - not overly happy with NVIDIA at the moment.

Re: Does Nvidia 3D Functionality Work with Any 3D TV?

So I did buy a new vid card; a Radeon 7750 HD based one. Works fine with TriDef. But, it was not easy to put all that together. I'm an IT guy by trade right now, so if I find it difficult, I can't image what regular folks go through trying to make stereo work on a PC. Does not make me think 3D commerce will get very far.
