Just about to pull the trigger - GX7, 20mm, 45mm

I've been a long-standing and very happy LX3 user.  The ability to carry such a good camera in my pocket is just great, but always been slightly constrained by DOF, focal length and no viewfinder for the wife.

So after whittling away at the list of other things to spend my money on, have reached the camera replacement.

Generaly we photograph people, street and landscape, generaly when travelling, hiking, sailing and skiing.  I really value small size, my wife wants to get back to a viewfinder

So the plan is to get a GX7 plus 20mm and Oly 45mm f/1.8

Follow that up with the Gm1 plus 12-32 when the bank balance has recovered, use the Lx3 as the small one until this time.

The GM1 will really be attractive when/if they do a kit of 12-32 + 35-100.  Anyone know any dates for the 35-100?

Any way, that's the plan.  Anyone with this setup with anything useful to add?  Amy I going to cover my needs?  I think so!

While I do not have a GX7, I do have a 20mm and 45mm.  These are my favorite results and give me very good results.

I don't have the GX7 or the unreleased 35-100, but everything else on the list and I say go for it. You'll love the GM1 + 45 combo.

I guess you went with the GM1, 12-32, 20 and 45 then. Would have been my choice but my wife prefers viewfinder and bigger camera.

You don't have any issues with the camera being so small to operate?

These are the cameras I have. With the GX7 I use the 12-35 and the 35-100 almost all the time, and that's really all I need. A few times I use the 45 macro or the 7-14. It is a splendid camera, and these are splendid lenses.

I use the GM1 with the 12-32, a realy good kit lens. Very few times I put the 45-150 on, while the Sigma 60, an excellent lens, is collecting dust.

The GM1 is great to carry in the pocket of the jacket or coat, but I much prefer to use the GX7: EVF, tilting screen, much better manual controls, feels better in my hand. This is totally personal, though.

You will enjoy both and the lenses you mention.

No, none. I pinch it between thumbs and index fingers or use it one-handed.

Re: Just about to pull the trigger - GX7, 20mm, 45mm

GX7 is a pretty big jump in size from an LX3. I'd suggest a GM1 and kit lens first. I have an LX5 ( better IQ than the LX7) and it can be carried anywhere. I have a GX1 ( smaller than a GX7 and it never goes out much as it needs a dedicated bag) and if I need a more specialist camera I take the GH3.

Re: Just about to pull the trigger - GX7, 20mm, 45mm

The GX7 is my favorite camera to date, the 20mm is my favorite lens, and the 45mm has been my second-most-used lens, though with relatively recent acquisitions of the 7-14 and 75 I'm not sure it is still in second place. I think you've got a good plan there (GX7, 20, and 45), and if you also want the GM1, skipping any 14-Xmm zoom with the GX7 and waiting for the tiny and apparently quite good 12-32 makes a lot of sense to me, too.

If your wife really wants a viewfinder (as do I), that's just a feature that you can't fairly omit, so getting the GX7 first is a good idea. I bet you will both end up liking both bodies, even though each of you may prefer one over the other, and those will be three great lenses for both bodies.

That's my micro 4/3 set up, exactly. I got the GX7 + 20mm kit, and I added the 45mm later. Both lens a nice, although the 20mm could have a faster AF.

The GX7 is pretty nice as well, I just wish the shutter was quieter (the eshutter is very nice, but almost unusable during the night, as it gives fairly unreliable results).

Here are some random pics taken with both lenses:

My problem is that given the quality of the 12-35 and 35-100, I find it difficult to use a prime. And for compactness the 12-32 is quite excellent.

Thanks! Here's my flickr account:

Lots of random pictures, taken with either this GX7 or with my good ol' 5Dm2. Some other pics taken with the GX7, but with different lenses than the ones mentioned in the thread (and are not mine :p).

I'd swap the Panasonic 20mm for the Olympus 17mm personally.

Your in the UK, have you considered the EP5.

You can currently pic up the EVF4 as a free gift.

And it looks like the kit price for the EP5, 17mm and EVF 4 has dropped.

This is what Steve Huff had to say,

The GX7 continues to impress me.  I love the 20mm also.  If you're inclined to get a zoom, the kit (14-42 II) is by far the best kit zoom I've ever had.  I can't justify anything more expensive because it's just that good!

On another note - it's not my business, but I can't imagine sharing a camera with someone - my wife or anyone else.  How does that work???

The GX7 is quite a bit larger and heavier than the LX3, but it is an excellent upgrade.  I have both of those cameras (plus the GM1 and a few more) and can tell you that you will not be disappointed. It is a very capable piece of equipment.

Congrats on your new GX7 / GM1, and lenses.

which camera will be your "go to" camera?  GX7 or GM1?

do you intend to carry two (or three) cameras   at the same time  on assignment?

post some pics here once you get the new camera(s).

regards.

We're going to go with the GX7 in the first instance, and probably only go with the GM1 if:

1. Find that theres times we would rather have the LX3 with us for size issues

or

2. They release a GM1 12-32 35-100 super kit making it a no-brainer.

If we find we don't have an issue with the GX7 size, that's the point of difficult decisions on what zoom combinations to get!  14-42pz + 45-150, or 14-140 mk2, or alternatively go with  35-100 2.8. Or even just 75mm. But lets leave that until later!!!!!!

The GM1 is going to come into its own when walking, when the Lx3 on a hip belt is super easy, and just having in my work bag in the city.

I've given it a couple of go's to answer this!

It actually works quite well with one camera.  We like the same stuff, but have a different 'eye', which creates quite a good conversation about the shot.  We also quite enjoy the iPhone camera, being simple and with us all the time etc.

On that note, my fondest camera was a little ixus ii way back when.  Fixed lens, super small, crappy screen, but really good photos and always in my pocket.
