45mm Mangoes

A tray of mangoes which I thought were too tasty not to share.

Taken with the 45mm and nx200 at f1.8

I think this shot is a bit nicer although not as in-focus as the previous but if you stare at it on a large monitor long enough I swear a mango will pop out and you'll be able to eat it!

and finally something less edible (at least I don't think it is edible)...

Hope you enjoy!

Thanks,

Paul

Re: 45mm Mangoes

Alright Pal

Can I get your opinion the 45mm lens?

Currently I have a Samsung nx300, 18-55 and 55-200 lens. I mainly take pictures of my 3 year old and 3 month old boys.

Ive found the 55-200 to give better image quality but at times its not fast enough for my 3 year old who is constantly moving.

Is it a "fast" lens?

Good for portraits?

Etc?

Thanks

Tom

Re: 45mm Mangoes

I'm curious as to why you took them at f/1.8. The depth of field looks too shallow in the first picture as only a few of the labels are in focus.

I really like the 45mm. It's pretty much as good as the 30, maybe even slightly better, and just as light. Too bad it's not as compact, and it would've been nice to have a reversible hood or OIS to compensate for the size (OIS would have made it perfect for indoor portraits). Oh well, can't complain too much for the price. At least the hood screws onto the 30mm too, though I'm not sure if it'll cause vignetting when wide open?

Re: 45mm Mangoes

Hi Tom,

I have the 12-24, 16, 30, 20-50 and 50-200 as well as the 45.  I just love this lens.  I think it's quite fast, faster than the above and I really like the way it renders the image.  It's my favourite of the bunch.

Thanks,

Paul

Yes, the dof is a little shallow and it has caused parts of the image to be out-of-focus. I just wanted to use the lens wide open and try to create a feeling of depth so they 'popped' a little.  (and probably a stack of other reasons like "he doesn't know what he's doing" etc   )

I think it's a little better than the 30 for out-of-focus areas but the 30 is a brilliant lens too.

The 45mm lens hood totally annoyed me! I still don't like it!  It's the only lens I own with a hood that doesn't stow reversed onto the lens.  It's also screw on/off rather than bayonet. Could they make it harder?

In the end I just leave it always attached to the lens and accept that lens plus hood represents the true length of the lens.  Not at all compact but very light.  I put up with that because I think this lens is worth it.  Think it cost me around $250 here in oz which has to be a bargain.

Didn't know it also fits the 30 but I am guessing you might be right about vignetting. I have a Pentax 31mm lens with a built-in hood and it's a little shorter as well as a petal design (cut away from 2 sides).

Thanks,

Paul

Re: 45mm Mangoes

The 45mm doesn't have OIS. It's still good for indoor portraits because it's fast (both in terms of wide aperature and AF speed), but if it had OIS you could take shots with slower shutter speeds without blurring excessively. As it is, if you're in a room with low lighting, you'll probably need to crank up the ISO even at f/1.8 to get the shutter speed quick enough to avoid blurring, especially for moving targets (feisty pets, energetic kids, etc.), or use a flash.

Re: 45mm Mangoes

Both are well worth it if you can catch them on sale. At full price, I guess you'll want to pick one unless you have a great budget. Too bad they're not a little further apart in focal length, although supposedly the 45mm is closer to 48mm?

Keep in mind, though, that you can take portraits with the 30mm too, as long as your subjects don't mind you approaching closely, or if you don't mind cropping... case in point:
