Never saw female wood duck before

Female woody appeared to be not as colorful and more shy, than a hubby, but still gorgeous

And a hubby

Aren’t they a timid little thing, nice photos

I have noticed over the last several years more and more a showing up around here in Alberta Canada.

I am sure last year I seen a Mandarin duck of all things

Great captures Greyser.

I love Wood duck images. I hope to see some Wood ducks in real life myself someday.

Re: Never saw female wood duck before

Beautiful photos! I find it fascinating how in much of nature -- and apparently ALL of the bird world -- it's the MALES who have to be "pretty" and impress the females with their good looks. But in human society, it's just the opposite, although then the males jostle and fight to "win" the "prettiest" females.

The different ways nature has established for attraction of the sexes in different species are fascinating, and probably nowhere more than in birds. I have several pairs of cardinals that visit my feeders; the males are gorgeous, the females much more subdued in color. But it's the bower birds and birds of paradise in South Asia that are truly amazing! Every time I see a show coming up on something like that I make CERTAIN to set my DVR. Some of those dances are incredible.

All the same, just seeing two pretty little ducks paddling around like that is pretty special, too, and I appreciate you sharing the photos.

Thank you guys. They are really timid little things, as Ian said, shy and humble.

Unfortunately 1024px. copy does not show amazing details provided by K-3.

Good shots for sure.

I first saw a female some months back when shooting at the local reservoir. She's not in perfect focus, for some reason I must have focused on the male on the first link, though good enough to get the general idea.

As usual the male colors are dominant. A female is more humble. Humans are opposite though

Nice pics in this thread; thanks all.

I got this one last summer on a pond surrounded by deep green grass. I liked the combo of the female wood duck with all that reflected green on the water.
