An independent 'specialist' camera shop that has survived the recession says that after a recent stock take they found that almost every model they sell could be replaced by another.

Shop owner Reg Nutkins said "But thanks to the development of Mirrorless we've seen a massive increase in DSLR users saying what a heap of dung Mirrorless is, and vice versa - which is great."

"But the fact is they all take photographs once you take them out of their boxes. If you charge the batteries first of course!  We also specialise in having an online unboxing video for every model we sell and those are proving incredibly popular." Reg added. "And we are thinking of also having unboxing videos for lens hoods and small accessories - although maybe those should be renamed un-blister packing videos?"

Avid photographer Brian B O'Brian said "It used to be really boring when the major camera companies only had a few models each. Even though I used to get the brochures for each model I could learn all of them off by heart in under a week. Now it's completely different but I specialise on a few key models and in that way I can easily correct people when they get their facts wrong on forums and things."

Industry spokesman Takashi Tamegawa said "Maybe we do have too many models. But when you have teams of engineers dedicated to producing a new model every 9 months in order to get their bonus, it's a culture that's hard to crack."

A buyer from Dixons said "I don't give a toss what they do as long as they meet our price points. Otherwise it's cameras out and men's grooming in!"

Are you talking about Nex series or Pen? It's really hard to tell models apart....;-)

Perhaps we're headed towards cameras as jewelry statements. That could be very profitable!

We've been there for quite a while now, the fetishization of camera gear.  Leica hasn't offered Limited Editions, and many Japanese manufacturers haven't offered selective color combinations, for nothing you know.

Cameras now are computers with a lens. I think that many people tend to shy away from last year's technology so the camera companies feel the need to constantly come out with new models lest people think their cameras are "old" technology.

They are already.  I wonder if Hasselblad are making the profits they expected with the bits of wood they add to Sony cameras that are perfectly fine in their original state.
