How many of you use lens hoods?

Re: How many of you use lens hoods?

I almost always do too, except my Sigma macro lens which has a very deeply recessed front element.  I also even use one on my 40mm pancake.

It does add a little protection, but the primary reason I use it is for flare / stray light.  A godsend in the studio too if it's a studio with bright walls and there is flash bouncing around all over the place!

The one area where I have issues is when using my square filter system, I carry a piece of old black stiff background cloth in my bag which I use as a flag - my 10 stop ND is a magnet for flare, I think its internal filter flare from light coming in the edge of the resin!

For me it's really a case of why would you not use a lens hood. It's not going to do any harm if its not needed, weighs little and requires no effort to use.

Yes, it's like driving without a seatbelt or cycling without a helmet; not having a hood on just doesn't feel right.  It feels naked and precarious.  Then again, all people named Colin agree on everything.

I do, all the time

Just curious how often you use lens hoods. I personally never seem to use them. am I missing something, do they really help.

Thanks in advance

Yes they do help. I rarely want flare in my images, and the hood removes that threat as long as i don't have the light source within the frame.

All the time. Protect against more than light.

Re: How many of you use lens hoods?

I do all the time on L lenses except when I put on Cokin Z-Pro filter.

On my non-L lenses, I don't bother on 40 STM (that lens will be sold soon as I basically don't use it), 15 FE and two M lenses.  But I am considering to buy hood for relative new Canon 35/2.0 IS (treat as a L lens) either $50 OEM one or a cheapo $10 third party one.

Never, except with my 300mm f2.8 and that's more to protect it.

A few times I've taken shots with one and without one and couldn't tell the difference.

When I see a flare in the viewfinder, I block it with my hand.

If the lens came with a hood, I use it

If a lens did not come with a hood, I don't usually run out and buy one.

Re: How many of you use lens hoods?

They're on all the time on the 50mm f1.4 and 35mm f2, half the time on the 70-200 f4, almost never on the 10-22 (but that one's really clumsy and I use a polarizer on that lens a lot).

All my lenses are primes and every one has a hood. I always use them. Sometimes they serve a purpose and when it turns out a hood was not required,  there is no down side to having had one.

Never ....  lenses are big enough already. I do add a quality clear filter to make it easier to clean.

I use a lens hood on every lens, always.  (With very rare exceptions)

I use it all the time too but how much does it really affect the image?

Always, except when I am holding a large progressive ND filter in front of lens

I got over putting UV filters on my lenses and always keep a lens hood on them. (I still keep the UV filters if I need to shoot on a windy beach.
