50-200 won't autofocus /w NX300

Hi there,

I recently bought the NX300 (which I love btw) as I've just began a 5 month round the world trip. It came with the 20-50 lens which works fine and does the job very well. However I'll be on Safari soon, so I got the 50-200 lens also. This has worked wonderfully the past couple of weeks, however yesterday, for no reason as far as I can tell, the autofocus ability has completely disabled itself when using the zoom lens. The AF-MF switch on the lens is set to AF (tried switching between the 2 settings but the camera doesn't seem to recognize any difference at all and just sticks on MF). If I try and change the on-screen settings, the AF option is greyed out, and any AF-related options also. I've tried using different modes (Shutter, Aperture etc) but the camera just won't seem to enable AF mode.

It may be worth mentioning that the camera was acting up a little the day before. When zooming in/out the screen would kind of stagger (if that makes sense), and wouldn't be a 'smooth zoom'. I then had to turn it off and on to be able to take pictures. However it got over it pretty quickly.

Anyone seen this? I'm really hoping I'm just missing a trick and may have somehow accidentally disabled AF on a software level. The lens is only a few weeks from new and I'll be travelling constantly for months now, so will be so bummed if it's a hardware fault! :-/

Thanks in advance!

Elliott

I don't think you're doing something wrong.  There could be memory that isn't being cleared, to check on that, remove the batter for a while, maybe ten minutes, just need to make sure nothing is sticking around.  Firmware could be corrupt, so upgrading/overwriting the firmware, body and/or lens could help.  It could also be that the auto focus on the lens has actually failed.  There isn't a setting I can think of on the camera that would grey out auto focus.  I have had it happen where the camera wouldn't recognize the mounted lens properly if it is changed while the camera is on, just rebooting the camera would fix that for me though.

I am wondering if you found a solution. I am having the same issue.

I did not I'm afraid. Even took it to a Samsung authorised dealer to see if I was being dumb but it seems it wasn't user error. I learnt to live with it in the end, but I suspect it was a hardware defect.
