Are these two other ladies besides the ones you spoke with at your local market? Must be true, then!:

Nikon and Canon have made it pretty clear. If you're "serious", go to 35mm.

Who said you can't be serious with a DX camera?

Re: Two ladies on the wharf told me.....

I assume you mean the wharf at Hobart...

The Henry Jones Art Hotel across the wharf.

Looking the opposite way.

And a bit wider.

I was there in November 2004 - just after getting my first DSLR, the D70...

I didn't say that, but Canon and Nikon seem to be telling you that.  No D400, no 7D2 from Canon?  They seem determined to to make you want what they have, instead of giving you what you want.

Good grief Guys, if it's not patently obvious by now that there is not, nor will there be a D400, I can only guess you'll still be whining about its imminent release ten years from now.

If a successor to the D300/s never comes out, it's going to go down in history like one of the biggest business mistake Nikon ever did.

Welcome Chris

Great pics, would like to reproduce those some time.Yes it was the ladies at Salamanca market near the other side of the dock area. They are very confident ,even selling a D2X in expectation.Lived here 4 years after 56 on the mainland,a great place.

Forget the D400 and say hello to the D500!

Full frame hybrid in a smaller package like the Sony A7/R.

Coming soon...

In a few years there could actually be a "D400", but it will be an FX model, as all Dxxx cameras have been since the D700.

Maybe even next year. Canon has a rumored variable aperture 24-70. New kit lens for a new FX body?
