Any ideas whats wrong with my 1000D

Hi All

A few weeks ago my 1000D decided to start taking photos as if it was on acid. Please see the attached photo. From what I can tell looking at the histogram all of the colours are present, so I doubt its a problem with a single colour channel, but are highly compressed to the one side of the brightness. Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem with a Canon SLR or knows how to fix it.

I doubt its worth sending off to fix but I'm happy to try myself if anyone has any suggestions. I have since used its acid trip as an excuse to upgrade but it would be nice to fix the 1000D to use as a spare.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Have you tried "Clear Settings" (setup menu 3, manual page 114)?

Thanks for the reply Doug.

Yes I have cleared the settings. I also took the battery out for a week to see if that would reset something. No luck with either of those.

Re: Any ideas whats wrong with my 1000D

Well, that rules out the simple stuff, then.

I'm not sure what you are illustrating with the two photos. I mean, the first is obviously way overexposed, and the 5-second exposure is probably the culprit. But since the EXIF shows that it was manual exposure, that would tend to suggest that it was operator error. I also see from the EXIF that the flash was fired in that picture. Perhaps a brief explanation of the lighting conditions of the photo, and how you'd set things up, might be in order.

According to its EXIF, the second photo was taken with auto-exposure, shutter at 1/60 and flash fired. It looks properly exposed to me (for E-TTL flash). Is it the green-ness of this photo that you take issue with? Again, a brief explanation might be in order.

And is this problem only occurring with flash? If so, what flash unit are you using — the built-in pop-up flash?

If there is indeed something wrong with the camera, in the US Canon uses a flat-rate repair price that's somewhere between $250 and $300 US. I'd suggest you call up Canon and ask what the repair price would be, so you can decide if it's worth fixing.

Do the images appear this way on the LCD on the camera or do they only appear this way on your computer?

Re: Any ideas whats wrong with my 1000D-Artistic effect

Keep the camera like it is and use it as an artistic tool. Get a new one. ebay-prices are very low. even in the shops.

Re: Any ideas whats wrong with my 1000D

Apologies, I have been away for a couple of days.

Sorry I just picked a photo from the SD card for the first one, quite right looks totally like user error (i.e.my fault). Second one was of a white wall with power socket I took to check how dark it was coming out. I have already bought a 600D as a replacement (they are selling them off hear for about 230 sterling so I grabbed one) so the 1000D is certainly not necessary but it would be good to fix as a spare.

When the fog lifts outside I will try to take the same photo with the 600D on auto, match the 600Ds settings on the 1000D for comparison and take the scene also with the 1000D on auto. That should give 3 decent comparison photos.

Since I haven't had any replies from people who have also had this problem I'm assuming its quite rare and I'm trying to think of something which could cause the problem without stopping the camera working fully. Im actually thinking it may be one of the following.

1, loose internal connection - but would have thought that this would cause either intermittent problems of total failure.

2, failure of the metering system meaning it can't meter levels properly.

3, movement of one of the parts in front of the sensor, micro lenses or bayer filter? are these moved by the dust prevention/removal system? Im thinking that maybe this has cause something to go out of alignment reducing the light landing on a pixel (which may also explain the higher green levels than red or blue).

Thoughts?

Re: Any ideas whats wrong with my 1000D

Hi All

Ok this was taken with 600D on auto

While this was the 1000D on auto (pretty similar settings chosen which suggests to me metering is ok)

When switching to live view the screen appeared pink with some detail however these seemed to "burn out" over a second or so to a pink screen with no detail.

Any ideas appreciated and thanks for the replies so far.

I had an Olympus DSLR lens that once failed, so that the picture was dark.  Have you tried changing lenses to isolate the problem?  It looks like your lens or Canon 1000D camera needs repair or replacing.

By the way, that's a beautiful picture that you took with the Canon T3i (600D) camera.

Thank you for your kind comment about the picture, Im just lucky I have such great views from my balcony.

Yes I suspect the 1000D is beyond any sensible cost repair considering how old it is and how much I could get a replacement one for. I may take it apart and see if I can see a loose connector somewhere. I have tried with different lenses but no luck.

Thank you for everyones help and have a wonderful Christmas.

Hi

Did you try with another memory card. Perhaps it is a problem with the memorycard.

Only an idea.

Hope you can fix the problem.

Greetings

Misch

Well, it's not the lens, unless you've smeared green dye on it.

It looks like several color channels are missing. Do you  have a post-processing program that lets you manipulate color channels independently? If so, you might see if you can fix the photos in post by sliding up yellow, red, etc. The pics are also underexposed, which can also be fixed to some extent in RAW.

Other than a broken camera, the only thing I can think of is that you've somehow got a picture setting that is commanding these results. But I don't even know if such drastic changes are possible in-camera.

Good luck.

Re: Any ideas whats wrong with my 1000D

It looks like your sensor is fried.

You could send it to an authorized Canon service center. They will examine the camera, determine the problem, and give you an estimate of cost to repair it. It will probably not be worth repairing, but at least you'll find out what's wrong with it -- the images certainly look strange.
