Re: Large Birds, FZ70

The first one is not easy to shot but I prefer the last two (clean and not distracting background).

Well done, Michel.

Re: Junco with a white tail

I think the tail is overexposed due to the background (ground here) which seems dark. In that case, generally the auto exposure tends to compensate, overexposing the pict Better light could have helped in that case but exposing for highlight (-2ev for exemple) could help too I think.

Spot measuring on the tail (when the camera has one) can work too but in that case it is very not easy (not much of the tail in the viewfinder

Nice try, Michel

Thanks for looking and  the helpful comments Michel, much appreciated.

Re: Junco with a white tail

Trafford, I have the same problem with some birds birds with smooth white areas. Buffleheads are my nemesis. If I expose to get some detail in the white areas, the rest of the bird is severely underexposed. Gentle light and shooting raw helps but still not good enough.

The only solution I can think of is to have the Junco place its tail in shadow

You continue to amaze, Rodger! The Magpie Lark is my fav, with the bird so clear and with the pretty background. Looks like a lovely area. Well done, Rodger.

Re: Large Birds, FZ70

Wonderful shots, Gary! I'm picking the first as my fav, the background isn't too distracting for me, the bird stands out very well.

Re: squirrels

Yes, they are indeed cute. The third one wins it for me! The pose and exposure are great.

Thanks Vickie, I may have to resort to the old poacher's trick of raisins soaked in
brandy to slow them down.

Re: Junco with a white tail

Hi Trafford, its a lovely shot of the bird, but as others have mentioned, the tail is over exposed. Difficult lighting is a challenge for any camera and if you had underexposed the bird, the tail would probably have been properly exposed, but then you have a dark bird. Sometimes its better to underexpose a little to help get some detail in the "whites" as its easier to bring back detail in slightly underexposed areas than to get detail in overexposed areas.

I have this sort of thing happen a lot to my images and its something I'm aware of, but I'm not aware of it every time I take a shot. Usually I'm too busy concentrating on getting the bird and forget about everything else.

Re: Inflight Heron

Hi, first poster here...

A real newbie to photography, recently got a LX7 as my first "real" camera...anyways just wanted to share this one.

A Heron spotted while biking (took this one while riding the bicycle, so no composition nor framing) at Shark Valley trial, Everglades National Park.

This is a crop, the full size image is: http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/7947550954/photos/2784269/in-flight-heron

Looks good to me. With in flight shots, its very difficult to frame anything, but you have done a great job with this image.
