Suggest some wide angle lens for D7000

Very recently got a new D7000 body which is my first DSLR. Using with my old lenses: Nikkor AF 28mm f/2.8D, Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6D and a manual focus Nikkor AI-S 50mm, f/1.4. Getting satisfactory results.

But because of DX format camera, angles of view of all are short. The minimum effective focal length I am getting is 28x1.5=42mm. So there is complete vacuum in the wide angle side. Didn't buy 18-55mm or 18-105mm or 18-140mm kit to avoid overlap and to save money. (I'm a bit budget conscious about my hobby!)

Please suggest a reasonably ok budget short focal-range zoom or prime lens for landscape or group/travel or insect photography.

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, if the D7000 has screw drive you could get the Ver. 1 cheaply, the Ver. 2 with the afs type motor costs more but not too much.  Even with crop that is a 16-24mm lens FOV.

Buy a used Nikon 12-24, at $500-600 it is a great buy. Look on Fredmiranda or KEH.

Just to add my support for tokina - I have the 11-16 - great lens for my 7100 and also use it on my d600 FF.

Re: Suggest some wide angle lens for D7000

A few mentions for the Tok 11-16mm Nice lens I know, but I think it may have too limited a range considering what lenses you currently have. You would have a large focal range gap. It is not really a budget lens + it's quite large.

I'd recommend the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6

There are 3 flavors:

Sigma 8-16 with rave reviews

Tokina 11-16 F2.8 (i have it along with D7k)

And Nikon 12-24

I believe the Nikon has the best build quality and is the most convenient due its range. The Sigma is really wide and is not a daily Lens on its wide end but wide and sharp. The Tokina has the sweet range @ F2.8, a solid Lens.

here is a sample form the Tokina:

Cheers

I have it, and find it quite good.  Have not owned any other UW zooms to compare, though.

I just picked up a EX+ rated one for about $560. That's half off new.  The used ones at KEH do not include caps and hood. But I can order these separately and still come out good.

Re: Suggest some wide angle lens for D7000

If I were you I'd go for the Tokina 12-28.

It fills your gap from Wide Angle to 28mm, the price is in the same range as the 11-16 and according to most reviews it's a really nice lens (have not used it personally).

If you want to be even more budget friendly and you don't care much about low light, the sigma 10-20 4/5.6 is a very nice lens, cheaper than the tokina 11-16/12-28 and the 10-20 range is not too shabby.

You may eventually regret passing on the new 18-140, it's a great all-purpose lens that can replace a lot of other lenses in your bag! Starting at 18mm it's also a good lens to match with any wide angle lens.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll definitely look into it. Any idea how much these lenses cost?

I know 18-140 is a good lens. But my problem is right now I want to use the prime 28 mm f/2.8 as my kit. I've to get used to DSLR. May be in future I may ultimately buy 18-140. For now I want a very wide angle.
