Central Park in December
7

A few from a walk last week through Central Park, New York City.  A dreary day with the leaves are long gone with winter around the corner. Since it was dreary I played with both color and B&W (using Nik BW). All RAW files from Capture One 7

They capture the spirit of the park in winter.  Love the bridge photo the best.--

Beautiful. As someone completely ignorant about RAW, how did you get the sepia look? Was it a camera setting?

Thanks. Raw is the 'uncooked' information that is adjusted in one of many available RAW converters. Jpeg is the cooked version that followed a preset recipe. RAw's allow more latitude for adjustments than jpegs but a good jpeg is often enough if one shoots Fuji

As for the Sepia look. I did that with a B&W photoshop plug-in from Nik.

However, you do not need a plugin to get a sepia look. A very quick way in Photoshop or Elements is to go to Hue/Saturation, then click on Colorize, then move the Hue slider to the yellow area and play with it until you get the look you want. Below is the color version from above where I just used the method to convert.

Hue/Saturation in Photoshop, Click on Colorize, move Hue slider to Yellow.

I have both Topaz and Nik. I usually use Topaz BW since I have had it much longer but I like to play. I do not think either is better than the other, just different. The thing about B&W is that the possibilities seems endless. Part of the trick is to find  BW look that is congruent with the composition or theme. But even that is easy to get lost in the possibilities

Topaz version with cooler tone

Thanks. That was partly what I was going for, the 'old new york' look. Seriously, I love to look through books of old pictures of NY and other places. They had a very different feel than modern photos.

Love old photography. I am also collecting old books/pictures of Toronto and even working on a small (but never ending) project about its historical buildings.

Al, I really like how you managed the content and composition of your pictures, that what makes them look and feel like they were taken 100 years ago. Very nice.

Sepia tone just accentuates the concept but it doesn't make modern photo old. Photo effects are so misused nowadays...

Your processing is impeccable. Really done with an artist's eye and a lot of technical skill. I love all of these and I'm glad you showed the color versions and starting points. They were very instructive.

Great pics.

Thanks. About five years ago I went to a paid exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated to the history of photography. They more or less began around 1850 with glass plates. Those old photos had some nasty vigetting, the hand stitched panoramas were especially ancient since each section has its own vigetting and exposures did not always blend well. The use of dyes to get blues or sepia was sometimes over done but it is all new. One thing that stuck out for over 50% of these classics was the photographers had little mastery of composition. Subjects were often centered and the feel was often static. Houses where dead center. Little in the way of leading or flowing lines, use of 3rd to balance or 1/6's to add tension. Those were the golden days or photography. If you had a camera, knew how to use it, you could travel the world and sell everywhere you go. The thrilling days of wonder.

Below are a few more. Color and a little touch of 'old fashion'

Lovely reflection on the ceiling.

If I may suggest,

you should put them all together as a set (Flickr, Blogger, etc, free of charge). And your impressionistic flowers too.

Thanks. I used to have a strong presence on pBase then I had my own website, and still do. But for reasons not worth getting into I have not updated the website in almost 2 years or posted a blog or anything else, aside from posts on forums like this. I do plan to get back into it soon.
