Fix for Panasonic 20mm Banding in Post

Hi all,

I've scoured the net looking for ways to fix the banding issue when using a Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens on an Olympus body.

I tried Topaz Labs' DeNoise and Nik Software's Dfine 2.0.

DeNoise: It's easy to find the banding settings in DeNoise, but no matter what I set them to, I couldn't remove the banding completely.  Furthermore, I didn't want to do noise reduction.  I just wanted to eliminate the banding.  DeNoise does not provide the necessary flexibility to solely address the banding problem.

Dfine 2.0: You can target the adjustment to just the banding issue, but the option is buried.  When in Dfine, select the "Reduce" tab, then expand the somewhat hidden area by clicking the "More" link. From within the Reduce->More area, you can turn on the option for Debanding.  You can also fine tune just how much the debanding is applied.

Summary: Use Dfine 2.0 and find the Debanding feature.  You can strictly target banding without denoising the image.

If anyone has any better methods to just perform debanding, please let me/us know!

Jeremy

Yes, Dfine is surprisingly good with banding.  It hasn't been updated in ages, it seems like anyway, but it's still what I use for problem noise.  Though, the debanding can easily be overdone with adverse effects, but one just has to be on the lookout for that potential.
