Easy enough. Summed up by another forum... goes like this:

  • better video than K5
  • Focus peaking (K5 -none)
  • cheaper than K5
  • IQ the same as K5
  • DXO mark 79 on par with K5 /D7000 at a smaller price
  • Smaller and refreshing look than K5
  • Native K nount
  • Cheaper than NEX7
  • Best IQ in its class
  • NO other MRLC provides full ranges of lens system WITHOUT adapter
  • Excellent Value for money

The Pentax K-01 is a great camera.  Great looks, easy to use, perfect for Limited and other small lenses.  Stills pics are awesome, movies just OK.  This is a classic, IMO, and a perfect companion to the K-5s and K-3.  DPReview's negative AF comments are NOT correct, just update the firmware to 1.04 and you are good to go.

Re: Pentax K-01 Camera with APSC sensor

I really like the focus-peaking... just hit the OK button while framing (or turn the adjustment dial after hitting OK) and it zooms in for very accurate focus... awesome.

Tons of lenses out there... in-camera stabilization, too.  ISO 6400 is usable.

In-camera HDR does surprisingly well, if you like that look.

Also, DXO software supports a lot of the Pentax lenses so that was plus for me since I use DXO sometimes.

Two downsides - Continuous shooting in RAW is slow, and the battery takes 4 hours to charge (but lasts very long, too.)

Re: Pentax K-01 Camera with APSC sensor

My black & white K-01 sees a lot of use. I keep my DA35/2.8 macro lens on it almost constantly and just love shooting with that combo. If Pentax would release this camera with a VF and WR it would sell like hotcakes. When I purchased mine I had no idea I would love shooting with it so much. Now, I wish I had ordered two of them!

Exactly the way I equip mine and the sentiments are the same.   Also wish I would have bought another K-01.

I love everything about the camera, except for AF, which is just too slow for kids moving in all but perfect lighting.

Agreed.  I use it only for landscapes and it is great for macro.

Re: Pentax K-01 Camera with APSC sensor

On closeout I went with the K-30 to complement the K-01, and find it surprising the extent to which I prefer the K-01 in general shooting conditions (not in bright sunlight, not in the rain, not when shooting telephoto handheld, not shooting action). Well, OK, a lot of exceptions there - but really the majority of my shooting is not in those situations.

It is so quiet and smooth, and the build is most definitely a step up. This isn't meant as a rant about the K-30 (which in fairness was the first time I bought at Pentax dSLR that wasn't flagship). What I like about having these two cameras is that the overall menu system and button layout is similar - and the sensor/processing are a near match. Transitioning between them is easy.

By the way, I have no idea why - but the K-01 seems slightly better at AWB and nails proper exposure in challenging lighting (but I still miss exposure compensation in TAv mode - an unnecessary frustration).

Yeah, but you all are forgetting all the negatives, like

it's too yellow

Mark Newson designed the skin

it's too thick

it's still K-mount

it's too yellow

there's no articulated screen

it's not weather proof

it's not FF

it's too yellow

I'm sure I left out a few.

Yes, I have a yellow brick myself and enjoy using it with Takumar lenses.

The number one reason I like the Pentax K-01 and the DA35/2.8 macro lens...

Nice shots and here is the reason I like the K-01.  Not much of a shot composition wise but shot at ISO1600.  Sharp with accurate colors.  The violet top on the chair is rendered accurately and until I had the K-01 or the K-5 I never could get violet or purple to be accurate.  Shot with an FA31.

Low light (without flash) : ****

Action / sports : **

I don't understand HOW Kids / pets gets *****, but Action / sports ***. (kids and pets don't act??)

K01's score for Low light is excellent, if not super. At least, it is as good as K5s.

Why not just order another one then ?

I too am tempted to get one while they are still available . Perhaps in the new year .

I know what some mean about it being too yellow , but there is a significant price difference between yellow and other colours .

Just curious. Is yellow cheaper or more? I admit to buying mine when the price was barely below MSRP (someone had to), and the classy, conservative black and silver body was at least as cheap as the others - probably cheapest. I would have taken whatever was cheaper, but must admit yellow makes me think of a lot about the Morton Salt lady on Cheers. Really, that mind image doesn't encourage you to shoot seriously. But I would have gotten over it eventually. I think.

Pffftt. Black is boring, wimpy. Grow a backbone and yellow up while there's still time.
