Olympus 75mm lens and close-up filter for macros?

Has anyone tried the Olympus 75mm F/1.8 lens with a close-up filter for macro pictures?  I am considering getting the 75mm lens and want to use it for multiple situations.  With it being so sharp and with a very good macro filter, will it be useful for pictures of small flowers and such?

Yes, here my report:

In short: The 75mm is a very good lens,

but not a very good macro lens

I've used it with a Marumi 330 Achromat. It only bring the magnification up to about x.4, but its absolutely brilliant.

I don't have the answer to your question, but you've got me thinking about adding a quality closeup filter to the 20-40, which already starts with a .3x magnification.

Closeup filters, being of simple construction, lose little on a quality lens. Where they fall down is on flatness of field, which isn't much of a problem in most cases.

I've thought of the same but I wonder because the close focusing on the 12-40 zoom is outstanding at all focal lengths but you are also just inches away from the front element of your lens and I wonder how well this would work. Please keep us updated if you try this out.

Consider an extender instead

You can get an active extender for not much money. Guaranteed no added optical distortion, all it will do is alter the min/max focus distances. Something like this:

Re: Consider an extender instead

I have a 60mm macro lens and want even higher magnification. How much magnification would it add? It depends on the focal length of the attached lens and i see this is 26mm total extension.
thanks

I did, but I prefer using a dedicated macro lens...

Here you can see a water droplet, taken with the 75mm and Raynox 250

No idea. Somebody somewhere probably has a calculator for that sort of thing.

I found an on-line calculator that suggests a 26mm tube extender will increase the max magnification of the Olympus 60mm from 1:1 to 1:1.27

... although I found another formula that suggests it would be 1.43

"Magnification gained = # of mm of tubes used / focal length"

I'm surprised at the contrast issue with extension rings. I don't think that is normal...

Close-up lenses are problematic, unless they are designed for the lens. The results might be fine, or not so good. My Sony R1 has a dedicated close-up lens which works very well, but putting it on another lens may not work well at all...

Have you tried reverse-mounting another lens on the 75mm?

I love the fact that there are so many ways to go macro. A true macro lens. Closeup filters on a standard lens. Extension tubes. Bellows with a standard lens. Bellows with an enlarging lens (really high quality and magnifications). Reverse ring with a single lens. Reversing one lens on the front of another. Telextender (which will double the image size at the same close focus point).

That's 8 options. Can anyone add to the list?

Can you get close enough to take frame filling shots of average size flowers with this combination or is the magnification achieved only suitable for large flowers? If you can post any samples that would be really helpful.

Thanks.

Smithy, this is a very old thread, from 2013. It's probably better to create a new thread than dig up an old one - who knows how many of the folks in this thread are still around or whether the person you're asking still even uses M43.

Sterling
