New X-E2 flash mode?

So I just got my X-E2 and was working through figuring out the controls and can't seem to get the flash to fire.  So can anyone who has one help me figure out if I have a defective model, or if I am doing some thing stupid.

I have both shutter and aperture in auto, and I press the flash button, the flash pops up, but in the top left of the screen there is a yellow no flash symbol.

Also If I go to the Q menu, the flash mode is set to auto, but its greyed out and I can't change it.  Is there another setting that I am missing to enable to flash?  Also should to be able to change setting with the flash down.  Or is it the camera I have doesn't recognize the flash has popped up?

Thanks,

Andy

You can't use flash in silent mode - are you in silent mode?

Try taking the camera to a darkened area where you know the flash should go off. Take a shot, if the flash does not go off switch to program which means take the shutter or aperture out of "A" so you have to choose one. Set a low ISO to be sure the flash fires.

If it did not fire in auto and auto ISO is being used, which I think it defaults to the camera is doing everything and fires the flash if needed.

If the flash does not fire when you switch to manual override in any combination you most likely can be in silent mode which while turning off the sounds turns the flash off.

You can also check the owners manual for the XE-1 if you do not have the one for the XE-2 for some reason and search for silent mode and flash related topics on the Fuji web site. Just go the the camera and then the Support tab and that is where manuals reside. They all work the same.

I agree that you are likely in silent mode. If not and the flash is set to auto, the flash will only fire when it is needed. You would need to change the setting to force flash. Good luck .

The flash will not work in ANY of the bracket modes too.

Yep I had it in silent mode.  Thought that just turned off the beeping but I guess it does more then that.  Need to go back to the manual before I change things.

Thanks,

Andy

I've been there with the X-E1, you need to set volume to off to get rid of the P&S sound effects.

Re: New X-E2 flash mode?

Thank you, Chris for your solution to the problem with the flash not flashing! Very much appreciated!

I did set my X-E2 into silent mode a while ago and that setting was a ”suspect” when I could not activate the onboard flash. After having read your instruction I turned off the silent mode and, voilà, the flash worked as it should. The section in the manual about the flash did not tell about the influence of the silent mode, so your comment was very helpful.
