you do realize the only thing "special" about that lens is the collapsible extension tube, right?

It doesn't have a collapsible extension tube, it's a dedicated macro lens designed for reproduction ratios of between 1:1 and 5:1. Here the canon page with associated info:

Update of the Nikon 20mm f2.8 lens to a better lens for digital images.  This is way past due.

Any lens that is at or goes to 500mm for under $2,000.

The 300mm F4 VR (soon?) at less than $1,800.

And then I woke up....

Re: The Lens You Wish Nikon Made

Realistic for Sigma because they already released 3 lenses for APS-C since reorganizing (1 year). I'm sure other (eg 8-16mm) will be re-released shortly.

Not realistic for Nikon because all they release lately, for crop, are superzooms. Sure those primes can be done, only Nikon doesn't want to.

So in 2014 its more likely that Sigma will make another f1.8 zoom, than Nikon to make another DX prime.

24-85mm f/2 VR

Increased range, faster by a full stop, and adding VR all for $1100 more? You don't even get a full stop for a prime for that money (reference 35/1.4 vs. 35/2, and 85/1.4 vs. 85/1.8), let alone the other wishes. For zooms, the closest comparable lenses would be the 70-200/2.8 VRII and the 70-200/4 VR. The loss of a stop in that case took $1000 off the price alone. So a 24-70/2 could theoretically cost $2900 but I'm thinking closer to $4000 for the extra 15mm and VR.

The size might be a bit annoying but it's a lens I'd love to have too (but not in the market for at realistic prices)!

Sad thing is the only of the above that seems a close to likely is an update to the 16-85mm. Nikon otherwise seems to have made up their mind to leave us DX users to languish with yearly updates of 18-xxx mm f/3.5-5.6 (ok admittedly the new 18-140mm seems to be well received in terms of optical qualities).

A wide semi fast prime for APS-C

What's the one lens you most wish Nikon would introduce? Realistically. Or not realistically, if you prefer.

For me, it would be a 70mm f/1.8 prime (or possibly an f/2 macro). I shoot DX, so it would be a "105mm FX equivalent," and I wouldn't be bothered if Nikon made it as a DX lens, rather than FX.

I already have a 50mm f/1.8D, and I could get an 85mm f/1.8 if I wanted - but I'd like something in-between those two focal lengths.

thats semi small ...I don't think thats really asking too much.

...maybe something similar too the 14 2.5 for m43 ...or the 12 2.0 or something like that. Really the reason I left Nikon.

Re: The Lens You Wish Nikon Made

I was waiting for two lenses, a DX 60mm and a new version of the 80-400mm zoom. With DX cameras there was no equivalent in a prime to the 85mm f1.4 lens on a film or FX camera. Now there is the 58mm DX lens which is close enough only 10 years too late. It should have been released soon after the D1 cameras.

Nikon after more than 10 years finally updated the 80-400mm VR I lens which was a mediocre lens in every respect. Nikon replaced the 80-200mm f2.8 with the 70-200mm f2.8 VR I and then the 70-200mm f2.8 VR II as well as the 200-400mm VR I and the 200-400mm VR II lenses while completely ignoring the 80-400mm lens. I was sorely tempted to get a Canon camera so I could use the excellent Canon 100-400mm IS zoom lens.

At this time I would like to have a FX travel lens with a zoom range of 50mm to 150mm that was half the size and weight of the 70-200mm and had f2.8 speed and VR. Even a 50-135mm f2.8 VR would be OK. All the Nikon "travel" zooms are f5.6 lenses and VR does not compensate for the lack of f2.8 in terms of autofocus speed or the ability to photograph any subjects in motion, including landscapes with a breeze moving plants or people walking down the street.

My DX travel kit weighed 4 lbs. less than my equivalent FX kit and the differnce was with the weight of the lenses.

For FF: set of highest Quality 2.8 primes. Keep them relatively small and light.

18/2.8 g AFS or 18/3.5 g AFS

20 or 21/2.8 g AFS

24/2.8 g AFS

All: weather proof construction and well corrected high Quality optics

The DX 10.5mm is a fisheye. It's anything but rectilinear. And an FX 10.5mm fisheye is going to put a circular image on a 24mm X 36mm frame.

Re: The Lens You Wish Nikon Made

I'm mostly happy with what's available, but I'd like a new 35/2 or even 35/1.8 for FF. I'd also love to see the 28-200G updated with better optics and VR (fully aware that it will be heavier and more expensive).
