cheap secondhand

Hi ,

i am looking for moving from a canon S95 to a mirrorless camera.

Reasons:

- speed

- better IQ

- Lenses !!

I want i cheap , so my options might be rather limited.

Samsung has very good lenses , and the cheap  bodies for sale are NX100 , NX1000.

So , which bodies are known as good , and which to avoid ?

Current are NX300, NX2000, NX20 and Galaxy NX.

The main change in technology was the 14.6 to 20 MP sensor change, if you shoot RAW at all the 20 MP definitely has a lot more room for editing. The NX300 also added phase detect focus sensors on sensor (no way to tell when they will be used or not though) and a flip out touch screen. NX300 also has a faster processor than earlier models (I think NX2000 also does).

Only Galaxy NX and NX20 series (5, 10, 11, and 20) have view finders. NX100 could use attachment viewfinder, but none of the others have or can use viewfinders. You have to use rear display on them.

So my favorites are NX300 and NX20. Quick operation, touch screen is very handy for touch to shoot or changing focus points quick. The NX20 has a nice fully articulated screen and viewfinder built in, but slightly slower processor than NX300 (or not as quick at certain functions, like the NX20 locks out the camera interface more after shooting). Also pretty good ergonomics. I haven't used the NX2000 or Galaxy NX so can't comment on those.

NX300 series:

  • NX100, 14.6 mp, external VF available
  • NX200, 1st gen 20 mp, no external VF
  • NX210,
  • NX300, 2nd gen 20 mp and touch screen
  • NX300M, 2nd control dial on back

NX2000 series:

  • NX1000, 1st gen 20 mp
  • NX1100, Wi-Fi changes
  • NX2000 adds touch screen

NX20 series:

  • NX5, 14.6 mp
  • NX10,
  • NX11, with firmware NX10 and NX11 nearly or are identical
  • NX20, 1st gen 20 mp, articulated screen, better VF

Galaxy NX

  • single model
  • 2nd gen 20 mp
  • S3 Phone-camera hybrid
  • quad core 1.6 GHz Host (Android) processor
  • Similar camera hardware to NX300

Probably stuff I am forgetting

My favorite lens set:

  • 12-24mm ultra wide
  • 10mm f/3.5 Fisheye (fun lens, use when 12-24mm is not wide enough or just want fisheye effect)
  • 30mm f/2, compact standard
  • 45mm f/1.8, general purpose shallow depth of field or step down sharp edge to edge
  • 60mm f/2.8 macro, general purpose or close up lens,
  • 85mm f/1.4, portrait lens, not good at min focus distance or less (extension tubes).

On the 14.6 MP cameras the 16mm f/2.4 is amazing, on the 20 MP cameras it is only so-so.  If you just want small lenses I would say the 16, 30, and 45mm make a nice set of small primes, or if you are a zoom person both the 20-50mm and 18-55mm are pretty good.  But the 20-50mm is slow focusing and lacks OIS if that is important to you.

Samsung is a great choice if you want inexpensive

Eric

Re: cheap secondhand

thank you for this very usefull summary.

I remember having handled a Samsung (if i remember correctly a nx1000) in the shop this spring , and it focussed quick  , and i loved the user interface.

I will love the nx300 more i guess , if i look at it specifications , maybe i wait another month , christmas is just around the corner.

Is there a rumour for a nx300 successor/follow up ?

This might bring the prices down.

NX1000 with kitlens , secondhand , little used, goes for 260$ where i live (Belgium)

So maybe wait a little longer for more fun and bang for the euro ?

by the way , is there a lot of difference in 18-55  and 20-50 kitzooms ?

Re: cheap secondhand

I'd go for the NX1000 second hand. Then start saving for the NX20 successor (not announced or released yet, probably released in the next 6-8 months).

I bought an NX100 second hand a little over a year ago and have been very happy with it, but the NX1000 is for sure an improvement over it it in terms of image quality (but the NX100 has better ergonomics). I use the 20-50mm, 30mm, and 16mm. With the 30 and 16 I rarely use the 20-50 nowadays, but then I do live in Scotland so appreciate the two primes which deliver faster apertures. I find the 20-50 a great lens though, excellent in good light, and it goes small as well.

Re: cheap secondhand

nx300 seems not very expensive now, the handling is much better than nx1000. If you really want to save money, the 2gen will be a good choice, nx1000, nx200, nx210. I use nx300 now, but I owned nx1000 before. The IQ seems doesn't have too much difference.

I don't think nx300 will have a successor very soon, it is released this year, and there are still some 3gen models haven't been released yet. So the 4gen models won't appear very soon, and there are no rumors about it. However, nx300m is on sale now, but the only difference is only the 180º screen, I don't know will nx300m influence the price of nx300 or not.

Talks about 2050 and 1855. 1855 has faster focusing, ois and wider focal length, while 2050 has a compact size and ed.

Re: cheap secondhand

OK , nx1000  or nx300  i will buy

How about higher iso , is there a lot of difference between the two ?

And when buying 2ndhand , is the shuttercount very important ?

The shutter is electronic , isnt it , so does it wear ?
