Re: Canon ELPH 330 HS out of stock

The 330 is out of stock at two of the biggest online camera stores. I just got one.  I usually get my cameras at the end of the model run when they go on sale,  but I wonder if a new model will be announced at the 2014 CES? Hard to imagine that at the price the 330 is selling for recently, there could be a better camera.

The (black only) ELPH 330 is on sale right now (1:00 p.m. EST 12/17/2013) at Best Buy online for $99.99 with free shipping. I just ordered one to keep in the car, at work, pocket, etc...can't go wrong at that price as it is a decent little camera. (I have no connection to Best Buy.)

Darn! I bought one over the weekend for $129 plus tax at Costco for my son.

the 1080p video frame rate is locked at 24fps, you'll need to record in 720p to capture footage at the more common 30fps. I do not know why it is cheaper seeing as how the ISO is much greater on the 330.

My question is about the Canon Powershot ELPH 330 HS. I looked at the reviews of both the Canon Powershot ELPH 310 HS and the Canon Powershot ELPH 330 HS. I noticed that dpreview did not put how many fps the Canon Powershot 330 HS has, and the Canon Powershot ELPH 310 HS has 3.4fps. Is it because it is terribly slow? Could anyone answer this question for me please? And why is the 330 $100 less than the 310?

From what I have seen, when a model is being cleared out or being sold as a "loss leader" the price can sometimes drop dramatically, even lower that a prior model which is not as good.

Looks like if you don’t need more zoom, the 330 could be a better bet than the new 340. The 330 goes 1 mm wider, slightly brighter lens at wide (3.0 vs. 3.6), and fewer pixels (12 vs. 16). Other than more zoom, I wonder if the 340 is a step back?

Re: Canon Powershot ELPH 340 HS

I wonder the same thing. The 330 HS seems to be one of those rare compact cameras that Canon really "got right" and I wonder if in making the 340 HS Canon may have tampered with  the perfect formula. Sure, the extra zoom is nice but why a slower maximum aperture and why Digic 4+ instead of Digic 5 or 6? What is Digic 4+ anyway? The 330 HS performs extremely well and takes superb, very high-quality pictures, which is what I want in my pocket camera. I'll be interested to see if the 340 lives up to the same standard.

Re: Canon Powershot ELPH 340 HS

As has been written on forums, because of phones cameras probably the best way for camera companies to sell "non-enthusiast" point-shoot cameras is to increase the pixels and the zoom.

I wonder with extra pixels noise will increase with a small sensor

Re: Canon Powershot ELPH 340 HS

It is, ISO minimum is now 100, no more slow motion movie, but 30fps at Full HD. The 16mp will surely mean more noise. I told ya Canon realized the 330HS was too good and hurt their S120...

Re: Canon Powershot ELPH 330

Hi..I am planning to buy the ELPH 330 for my YouTube channel.I have almost read this whole thread and it seems like the ELPH 330 HS is the perfect choice for me.But I am also considering the Nikon P330 and just wanted to know if the P330 is better than 330HS when it comes to shooting videos?
PS - P330 is $110 expensive in my country than the 330HS

Stay away from 340hs, & 10x is enough I bet !!

I bet for cropping and/or large prints, that 340 16mp sensor will be crap compared to the 330 12mp. Sorry Canon, I think anything beyond 10-12mp on an itty-bitty 1/2.3" sensor is total non-sense!

Unsophisticated cam users like those big #'s, well at least they realize 16 is > 12 !

I did a comparison once, I took identical shots with a Sony 18mp and a 12mp Canon, various focal lengths and the 18mp has LESS actual resolution than did the 12mp ! Really !  Bigger files for sure, more resolution NO!

Not a lens issue, a SENSOR issue, too many pixels !  Silly stuff Canon !

I don't know how widespread "Frys Electronics" is in the USA. There are several stores in North Texas.  Right now they have the Canon ELPH 330 HS on sale for $119.00. I had a $60 credit at Frys for returned merchandize plus a $50 gift certificate from Christmas. Couldn't resist after all the good reports on the Canon forum about the 330, so I bought one. Got out for less than $20.

It appears to be a very good & conceal camera to carry everywhere.

It is a slow lens dense sensor issue. You can get more detail out of the 18mp if you have a very fast (f1.4-2) lens. Now these camera's are diffraction limited even wide open on the wide end. So it's safe to say that the f3.6 Lens of the 340hs leads to less resolution then the 330hs had.

That means by all means DO NOT BUY the 340hs.

Re: Canon Powershot ELPH 340 HS

It's a decent small good zoom range P&S.
Not a great one though. However anything better will cost double then what you paid.

I purchased one in mid-August to use on a stand-up paddle board expedition with friends down the Red Deer River in Central Alberta, Canada. It performed flawlessly all week on a single charge. A couple of weeks later the battery would go flat overnight. Got a new battery, same thing. It would charge and operate the device, but next day....

Canon repaired it under warranty, and were very quick, about a week turnaround. They had to replace the main board.

It's a nifty, compact, and effective handy go-to that I never have off my person. The X10 power isn't too shabby.

BTW, I it replaces a six year old Powershot A710is. I have one photo blown up professionally to 18X24 or so, and you can't tell that it's a bit too much. I suspect you'll have a few shots suitable for large scale framing with this finer sensor. Don't be afraid to try with your two or three very best.

I'm glad that it worked well for you on your SUP expedition!

I just got a stand up paddle board myself (haven't even stood on it yet lol), which prompted me to start thinking of a compact camera to take with me when out on it. Which led me to discovering the 330 and being lucky enough to still find one for a great price. Stoked!

Cheers,
