Eastern Slope Sierras Fall Colors - GH3. 11 imgs.
4

From a 9 day trip from Monterey, by way of Yosemite's Tioga Pass (10,000') eastward to SR 395 heading south, including sites around Lee Vinings, Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, Lone Pine, and a side trip to Death Valley, ordered from north to south on 395 in the Owens Valley, between the 14,000'+ Sierras and equally high White Mountains to the east.

Perfect weather, but would have liked some clouds, altitudes generally between 6000-9000'. Used the GH3/P-L 14-150 workhorse w/ circ. pol. filter for all, and yet to process the GH2/7-14mm shots. All from RAW>ACR>CS6.

First time shooting aspen fall colors, and I soon found that getting as close to the sun  dramatically enhanced the shimmering yellows, which became quite flat with sun behind.

Thanks for looking,

PB

SR 395, S. of Lee Vinings. Sierras in background.

On 6 mi. round trip hike to Walker Lake - 7300-8000' - about the limit for our 73 year old legs and un-acclimated lungs!

Lil' Walker Lake 8000' - South of Lee Vinings, off Oil Plant Rd.

Mammoth Lakes City Park 8000'

Convict Lake 7700' - South of Mammoth Lakes

Convict Lake

McGee Creek Canyon - S. of Mammoth Lakes

North Lake 9000' - all fall colors gone except the brown and rainbow trout!

Off South Lake Road, Bishop Canyon

As above

Death Valley Dunes pano. - two images at 117mm.

Very nice, and an area I love.  Did you catch the fish?

Thanks, Phil, our first time in the area, although quite familiar with the Sierra western slopes. I can see how the late Galen and Barbara Rowell chose Bishop as their base with his penchant for extreme climbing and the challenges of the much more vertical Sierra eastern side.

We enjoyed his Mountain Light Gallery, but the current processing/printing of his scanned 35mm slides up to their tragic deaths in '02 seems extreme.

Pete (who didn't catch the fish)

Beautiful series! I also particularly like the light and shadow of the dunes in the panorama. Well done!

Thanks, Stefano. The A3 print came out very nicely, and I'll probably take it up to A2 soon.

Makes me Home Sick

Greetings

I was born and raised just south of that area.  Spent most of my 20'sand 30's backpacking and living in my milk truck up there. I must have 3 or 4 thousand slice from those days.  They were some of the best times in my life.  I was down there in June of 2013 I just love the area.   It makes for great photo's all year long.   The fishing is good as well.

Nice work

Thanks for the walk do memory lane

Thank you, Roger. Although Louise and I have lived in the Monterey area for six years, plus two years in Oceanside in the 60's, we never got to the Owens Valley to appreciate it's beauty and grandeur - both its Sierra steep slopes to the west, and the western White Mtns. eastward.

We had a great week, much of it on rough dirt roads up the canyons. That 12 mile climb from the Bristlecone Pines Shulman Grove to the Patriarch Grove at 11,400' in the White Mtns. was the worst, though - particularly the return to Lone Pine after sunset on top!
