NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

Hi. I tried updating the firmware on my NX5 to the NX10 firmware which I understand is compatible. However I somehow installed the NX11 firmware which I can confirm is definitely not compatible with the NX5!

I now have a camera which I can turn on and take photos with, but have nothing on the screen or EVF.

How can I reflash the firmware back to NX5 without being able to see the screen? Can somebody help with the button sequence? Bear in mind I think the camera now thinks it's an NX11, but can't be sure.

If anyone can help I would be massively appreciative.

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

I don't think it is possible for either NX10 or NX11 firmware to be compatible with the NX5. Both NX10 and NX11 have amoled screens while the NX5 is normal LCD, so the screen drivers in the firmware would be different. I think the EVF in the NX5 is lower resolution, so its driver would also be different.

Your chances of reloading NX5 firmware are not good because even if you can get into the hidden service menu, you probably won't be able to see the menu items to select the right option. Also the latest drivers for NX10 and NX11 have removed access to the hidden menu, so that's another hurdle.

Do you know the version number of the firmware you loaded? To the best of my knowledge, the latest version numbers that allow access to the service menu are 1.11 for the NX11 and 1.31 for the NX10. The version number should also help establish whether you've turned it into an NX10 or NX11. You'll need to know that.

Firstly, download the latest firmware for the NX5 and extract the file NX5.bin. If you have NX11 firmware on the camera, rename NX5.bin to NX11.bin. If the camera has NX10 firmware on it, rename NX5.bin to NX10.bin. Copy the renamed file to tne root directory of an SD card and place it in the camera.

Now you need to get into the hidden service menu. Assuming the camera is switched off:

For NX11 in exact order: Set Mode dial to Smart Auto, Switch on, Press Up (top of 4 way controller), Press OK, Press Down (bottom of 4 way controller), then press OK while holding down the +AV button. The developer menu should appear.

For NX10 in exact order: Set Mode dial to Smart Auto, Switch on, Press L (left side of 4 way controller), Press OK, Press R (Right side of 4 way controller), then press OK while holding down the +AV button. The developer menu should appear.

Now the problem is that you might get into the developer menu but be unable to see it. There's just a chance it might be visible in the evf. What you are supposed to do next is:

- Choose 1. FW UPDATE -> OK
- Choose (1) BODY FW UPDATE
- Choose OK
- At this step, the green light should start flashing and a blue bar should appear on screen.
- when the light stops flashing and the screen goes black, half press the shutter and you should be in the NX5 firmware.

Incidentally, I have an NX10 which I upgraded to NX11 firmware but later changed back to NX10. I purposely kept the firmware at 1.31 so that I would have access to the developer menu and still be able to read the shutter count. I checked a couple of weeks ago and the menu worked but today I tried again and can't get into it. Don't know what's happened there.

Ok, I got back into the service menu. (I had been pressing ok before holding down the +Av button). The good news is that the options you need to choose once getting into the service menu are the defaults, so for these steps, all you need to do is press OK twice:

- Choose 1. FW UPDATE -> OK
- Choose (1) BODY FW UPDATE - Choose OK

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

Hi. Thank you so much for your help so far.

I am making some progress and think I might be able to fix this with your help. I am pretty sure that the camera now has either NX5 or NX10 firmware on it. The reason I think that is because if I try the up/down combo to get into the Developer Menu it does nothing, whereas the left/right combo does get me somewhere. I still can't see anything on the screen or EVF but I can get it to a point where the green light does start flashing as if it is updating the firmware.

But how do I know when it is finished? Obviously I can't see the blue bar so is it just when the green light stops flashing? I have tried it a few times but after the green light stops flashing I do the half shutter press but I still get nothing on the screen. If I turn the camera off and back on I still have no screen.

But the fact that I can get it to the flashing green light stage gives me hope.

Now, could the fact that it is not quite working properly be anything to do with the fact that the NX5 firmware on the Samsung website seems to be the same for the NX5 and NX10? I have tried renaming the file to both NX5 and NX10 and neither seems to work.

Is there anywhere I can download the original version of the NX5 firmware and try that? And would I have to call it NX5.bin or NX10.bin?

Andy

Incedentally, the green flashing light only lasts for about 10 seconds, feels like it might be too short?

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

One other question, would connecting the camera to a TV using an AV or HDMI cable allow me to see the menus etc on the TV screen? I don't have either cable so can't try it but wondering if it might be worth purchasing one?

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

DONE IT!!!

Thank you very much for your help. I just kept attempting the firmware update and then finally the green light kept flashing for much longer than before and it had done it

I think it's now thinks it's an NX10 but it seems to be working fine.

Camera saved!

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

That's good news.  Sorry I haven't been here to answer your other questions but I'm in Australia and we've been sleeping.  I had thought of suggesting the hdmi cable as that might show the menus on the tv.  I know the AV cable doesn't as it only works in replay mode.  Anyway it is not necessary now.

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

Ok so my camera is still not quite right. When I got the screen working again I was in an area of good light and everything looked fine. But since using the camera in lower light I notice I have a series of vertical lines all the way across the screen which are recorded onto photos or movies.

I don't believe this is a hardware issue with the lens or sensor. Looking at my firmware in the menu it is now showing version 01.21. Where on earth did I get that version from!? I know I downloaded several different files but now I can't even find that one again online.

Please can you help further?

I believe that if I can get it back to 01.20 my camera will be back to normal. But, now when I go into the developer menu and choose FW UPDATE it just freezes up and I have to switch the camera off.

I also can't update the firmware in the normal, non-developer menu, as it is not selectable (and never was, even before I foolishly started mucking around with it).

Any suggestions on what model my camera now thinks it is, or how I can force it to rollback to firmware 01.20?

Could you upload an example to a dpreview gallery and post it here.  The exif data may help decide what to do next.

Which country's Samsung support site have you been using?

I usually use Canada because the US site is hopeless and Australia's is usually out of date.  However in this case the Canadian site doesn't list the NX5 at all.   Neither does the US.  The NX5 is listed on both the UK and Australian sites but the only firmware available there is the latest version (1.22).

Please can you help further?

The fact that you can see the screen content at all means it is back to being an NX5.  If it had NX10 or NX11 firmware on it, you wouldn't see anything because both those cameras have amoled screens, not LCD.   The firmware version confirms it because neither NX10 or NX11 ever had a version 1.21.  If you can post a current pic from it, the exif will also confirm it.

Re: NX5 Firmware Update Failed Horribly

Ok I have uploaded both a photo and video - please download from here;

https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/8a97d7ae4097f664674387411826526d20131112002329/086489217997e2d35da3b9bbda9cb4ca20131112002329/84a233

So it looks like it's not actually recording the lines to photos, only video.

I think I got the firmware from the UK site, but I can't see 01.21 anymore so not quite sure whereabouts on the site I found it.

I have tried updating to firmware 01.22 and that actually lets me select it from the normal menu but it gives me a 'File error' message.

So close...

Actually the lines are recording to photos, check the black areas

Probably because you don't have an sd card in the slot with NX5 firmware on it in a file named nx5.bin

I also can't update the firmware in the normal, non-developer menu, as it is not selectable (and never was, even before I foolishly started mucking around with it)

The normal menu only supports updating to a firmware version higher than the version currently in use.  So unless the version on the sd card is higher than the camera is currently using, the firmware update menu item is greyed out.

Any suggestions on what model my camera now thinks it is, or how I can force it to rollback to firmware 01.20?

As per my previous post, it is back to NX5, which is good.   However, to go back to a version earlier than the one currently on the camera, you must use the hidden developer menu.  If you have or can find and download the 1.20 firmware version for the NX5, you can probably do that.

Please be aware that we previously had to rename the nx5.bin file to nx10.bin or nx11.bin because your camera had nx10 or nx11 firmware on it and would only recognise a firmware update file for the same camera version.  As it turned out, it must have been nx10.  Now that it is back to being an nx5, no renaming is required.  You should use the downloaded nx5.bin file as is.   Just make sure you don't get it mixed up with one of the nx10 or nx11 files that you renamed to nx5.bin.

Your other option is to upgrade to the latest nx5 version 1.22, which can be done either from the normal menu or the hidden one.  There is a risk that, as with the nx10 and nx11, the latest version may remove access to the hidden menu.  That would prevent ever going back to an earlier version.

My replies are lagging behind your posts.

Personally, I don't think that's bad for ISO 1600.  I never go higher than 800 on my NX10.

If I were you, I would stick with that firmware version or go back to 1.20 if you can find it.  If you're getting an error with the 1.22 version, it may be a corrupted file or bad download.

Hi, the camera NX11 has become a brake, experimenting with firmware and accidentally flashed firmware from NX5 (1.22)

Fotoaparat included, but now the screen and the viewfinder does not work!

In the service center did not help

Who knows how to help me?
