Alternative Lens Hood - Fuji 23mm
5

Given that the official Fuji hood for the 23mm is rather on the large (and conspicuous) side!

I've been looking at replacing it with a more low-key lens hood - more in keeping with the retro styling of the camera.

I've been testing a metal 62mm screw-fit hood today

This looks far more in keeping with the original design aesthetic, and simply screws in to the 62mm thread that the lens has available for filters/hoods etc.

I've matched the hood depth to the hood depth of the shallowest section of the Fuji hood - so as to avoid any vignetting.

Very happy with the results so far - no only does it look better (IMHO) but the IQ hasn't suffered in tests to date, and there's been zero vignetting.

I took plenty of test shots, all the way down to f/16, with no issues.

I'll try some filters next, to ensure that they don't cause any vignetting as they'll extend the hood by their depth of course.

Thanks for always coming up with helpful ideas and reviews. think fuji had gotten somewhat careless about the hood design for each of their lenses when they got beyond their first three initial primes. Hope they come back to being a bit more thoughtful to keep with their initial attention to detail they brought when they first released the x100, x-pro, and the three primes.

Morgan - eBay item number:370920628829

I have no affiliation with the seller - and there appear to be many similar or identical hoods available from a variety of sellers

Re: Alternative Lens Hood - Fuji 23mm

Chris,

My 23mm has not arrived yet.  But I ordered a similar looking lens hood a few weeks ago.  The depth of the hood I got was 25mm (just less than 1 inch). How deep is the one you are testing?

I also got a 67mm pinch lens cap as well, which fits the front of the hood.:

Re: Alternative Lens Hood - Fuji 23mm

Hi Chris,

thanks for the  hint. That does look indeed very promising.

The only bad thing is: I really don`t like screw-in hoods.

I even thought about cutting down the original hood, but so far I`d had not enough balls to do it

Regards,

Daniel

Thank you. Very good idea. The hood of the 23mm lens is just ugly. As is the hood of the 14mm.

I really wish there would be a rectangular version like or the 18mm and the 35mm lenses I love those lens hoods.

Re: Alternative Lens Hood - Fuji 23mm

Daniel, I was thinking along those same lines, cut the supplied hood off. While the metal scree in hoods are nice, I much prefer the bayonet mount. I figure if I really need to sell it later on I can always order a new hood if need be.

Now if only the damn lens would get here!

And Chris, good work as usual & thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Warren,

yes, you are right. I`ll get my lenshoods for the 23mm and 14mm to work tomorrow and will ask a machinist to cut it down on the turning machine. He can even do a small champfer then.

At least it will be done by a professional

Regards,

Daniel

Some vignetting with filters

Fitting this hood on top of a filter leeds to vignetting in the very corners of the frame

Just that bit too deep with a standard filter attached

So, perfect for filterless shooting - but I'll have to look at other options if a filter needs to be used

A thin filter would probably be ok by the looks of things - it's very marginal

Full frame @ f/16 with filter + Hood

Damn, that's too bad.

I pulled the trigger on the second of the hoods I posted. I'll have a report in two weeks.

Could you give details for the 14mm hood?  or a link?  thanks

Re: Some vignetting with filters

Have you tried to put the filter in the hood? I mean, attach the hood first and then screw the filter on afterwards. Many hoods have internal threads to do this. I got a rubber B+W hood for my Nikon 1 10mm and this solved the vignetting problem when I attached my UV filter.
