Best manual fast 50mm prime that performs well on e-mount (with adapter)?

Hi all,

What current manufacture lenses are considered the best fast, fully manual (not focus-by-wire, with aperture ring) 50mm primes, that work well when mounted on a NEX via e-mount adapter?

I don't care about the system the lens is built for, or mount type -- just the overall best performance from wide open down, and can be used fully manually.

It could be a rangefinder (though I do wonder if rangefinder and NEX are ever going to get along as well as they should) or it could be an SLR type lens, preferably around 300 grams (or less).

Thanks for any suggestions...

No clue about the best, but I can tell that the (probably) cheapest on the eBay market, Minolta Rokkor 50mm f1.7, is fun, lightweight and compact.

I use it for portraits with satisfaction.

Hi! I would recommend Minolta MD/MC 50mm f1.4. I cannot say best, but very good lens.

There are many great 50s.for me, I tried the rokkor 50mm f1.4, hexanon 50mm f1.4, sel 50mm f1.8, zeiss zm f2.0.

The E50 is a great performer, but the zm by far the best I ever used in terms of sharpness, contrast, weight and compactness.

You are looking for a lens that is still in production. Two obvious choices are Nikon 50 mm f/1.8 AF D and Nikon 50 mm f/1.4 AF D with both focus and aperture rings.

I use the Leica 50mm Summicron f/2 on my NEX6 with a Metabones adapter with excellent results. Very compact as well as sharp and the retractable lens hood is built in should you need it.

Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2

Look for the "Type 4" of that lens. Much cheaper than the new version.

If you want old,  Rokkor 1.4 or 1.7 if you want much cheaper.
Hexanon 1.7 is also VERY nice but I didnt like the 1.4 as much.

Pentax 1.7 is also very sharp.
I ended up keeping the Rokkor 1.4 and the SEL50F18 after testing several ones.

Seems everyone has their favourite. I happened to snatch a Canon FDn 50mm F1.4 off ebay and have been very pleased with the results.

I'm a bit concerned as to whether the Leica M-mount 50mm holds up on the NEX.

Did you see the samples here:

http://www.ronscheffler.com/techtalk/?p=224

I was a bit unclear about the Summilux 50mm samples -- for example, Sony's FE seemed better in the corners?

btw, any particular reasons you suggest Summicron rather than Summilux?

fwiw, my expectation is to use the 50mm lens as effective 75 on my NEX7, and 50mm on A7/A7r (or some other full-frame body if somebody makes one).

Just curious -- a few of you have suggested rangefinder 50mm's -- I'm curious to know if you're using an NEX7, or one of the other NEX'es with it?

Price. The Lux is up there. But if you can afford it, go for it.

I'd wait, though, for either to be vetted on the A7r. That shouldn't be too long.

I use the Summicron on a NEX-6. I don't recall hearing about any issues with it on the 7. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Pictures of a foggy, rainy day aren't that helpful. Those were shot to detect vignetting and color shift.

Anything under 35mm should work fine unless the rear nodal point protrudes too much, not usually an issue on normal-focal-length lenses.

The Summicron is a fantastic performer and f/2 is still plenty fast (especially on FF).
In my experience, the published MTF charts are right on: http://us.leica-camera.com/assets/file/download.php?filename=file_5480.pdf

What do you mean by "best"?

Fastest, smallest, lowest distortion, low CA, no vignetting, highest microcontrast, best built quality, sharpest in the center, evenly sharp across the frame, nicest bokeh, most unique bokeh, closest focus distance, large magnification, or something else?

And if you want all that above in one lens... keep dreaming

Of note is the fact that the 50mm Cron is slightly better resolving at the edges than the 50mm Lux as well...compare MTFs off of Leica's site.

The current 50mm Cron can be found used for around $1600. A bargain compared even to a used 50mm Summilux.

Re: Best manual fast 50mm prime that performs well on e-mount (with adapter)?

Thanks, I know it's not a precise question.

In general, I mean: a quality image, across the frame, from wide open, down. I hope that makes some sense? Best shot at the most keepers, you know?

Any hints on how something like the Leica Summilux 50mm compares to the Zeiss Planar f/1.4?

It's hard for me to find comparisons geared toward use on a NEX -- eg, one of those lenses is for a rangefinder, the other for an SLR.

I really appreciate all the help!
