Re: Black Friday batches?

Received another 062 today.  It has loud ticking, so I'm going to send it back and keep the other one that I have.

Re: Black Friday batches?

Hmmm. I ordered mine from Amazon this weekend and it came today. No tick noise, but I have the old lens cap. Isn't that strange?

Re: Black Friday batches?

Just received mine from B&H, ordered 11/28. Has new locking lens cap but no zoom "ticking". AF is fast and accurate and manual focusing is great with new split image focusing screen I installed in my 5D2.

Only strange if you received a newer build? What's the date of your unit?

First 3 digits of the serial number are 072.

Is there anybody who picked up this lens around Black Friday/Cyber Monday who can share with us whether or not they received a lens with this ticking problem? If so, I'd be curious what the first 3 digitals on the serial are now, to see how far along they are in the monthly batches. B&H and Adorama have the sale right now at the $1699 low price, but if they're still sending out copies from faulty batches, that might be bad.

I ordered on Black Friday from B&H and it has 052 first three digits.. it has faint ticking sound and I have yet not put it on the body...

So when the price dropped I ordered another one from B&H and it had 072... It also has tick tick sound...

I am not sure how it's image quality is but I will try the later one to see if 072 is optically ok...

All my other canon lens are fine including 24-105L F4 IS and 70-200 F2.8 IS II.

It's disconcerting that Canon hasn't fixed the problem or hasn't addressed it....

Re: Black Friday batches?

Is there anybody who kept a ticking copy of the lens and discovered that after a few weeks (or months, being how the canonrumors thread started in June) that the ticking went away by itself?

Re: 960 serial from B&H

The first one i received from B&H is 04 batch and it has noise. The second one received is 05 and still has it and this one is louder than the first one..Now placed 3rd order and hopefully it will be my last attempt. I also ask if they could send out most recent batch from their inventory if possible but they said cannot check...sigh

To tell you the truth this issue has nothing to do with batches.  You WILL randomly get lenses with or without the ticking issue.  I've done 4 exchanges with B&H and here were my results:

1. (did not recall the serial) this had bubbles on the front element

2. 03 serial - Faint ticking sound that seldom goes away but comes back

3. 02 serial - Faint ticking sound but loud squeaking sound when you rotate the zoom barrel

3. 06 serial - Loud ticking sound

4. 06 serial - No ticking sound, squeaking sound, or bubbles on the front element (I kept this one)

There are others that have reported no ticking sounds on 02 or 03 serials so I think I can conclude its all random if you get a "ticking" lens.

Re: 960 serial from B&H

I agree.  I went through 5 lenses to get a good one.  No correlation with serial number.  It's worth it but a pain in the rear.

Re: 960 serial from B&H

I just sent back my 2nd copy and waiting for the 3rd copy tomorrow. The second copy was soft and louder.... not a problem to exchange but have big hold on my credit card...

Did anyone who purchased the 24-70mm F2.8 II got the same problem

I recently got a new Canon 24-70mm F2.8 II and it has the same clicking sound while zooming. In fact it is like the sound of some gears.

Is this normal? I have looked at this issue and did not get a clear answer. The fact that the gears type of sound means some friction and that may be a potential failure point in future.

Could anyone please share your experience - especially on the newer lenses?

Re: NEW 24-70mm f2.8ii Zoom Ring "Ticking" While Zooming

To me it seems like they built it to last longer. I bet it won't tick after you've been racking it for 2 or 3 years. It's not an issue. Mine does it and I was happy about it, because I know when something is built like that it's usually built well. They don't make the zoom ring like that because it's a zoom ring. But it'll last you longer more than likely.

Since all the specialists seem to be gathered here, a plead to all of you who have an EF100-400mmL (mark I), anybody who can help me with my problem...?

Please, please, pretty please!

I have to decide if I take it with me to Japan soon, and would prefer not to have my IS die on me over there... THANKS!!!

Your 100-400 lens has the same problem as 24-70L2?Does it make click sound when zooming?

No, it doesn't! Kindly use your brain...

I posted another question in regard to my EF100-400mm lens (SEE OTHER LENS POSTS!) but nobody seemed to have any interest to reply to my problem, so I thought, since all you #SPECIALISTS# seemed to be engaged in this discussion, I would post it here to get some help.

But apart from your silly comment, none seems to be coming, so I guess I'm off to other Canon forums where there are more people with actual technical knowledge...

See ya!
