Interesting features of the D5300
1

A couple of things I noted on the Nikon Imaging site about the D5300.

Firstly its very light weight and it seems to be because the camera uses a new monocoque chassis that dispenses with metal in favour of carbon fibre reinforced plastic.   The monocoque is shown here:

Also the 'newly developed' sensor does not look the same as the Toshiba sensor in the D7100/D5200.

The new sensor ....

The D7100 sensor:

Re: No banding?

The available sample photos so no sign of the banding that was immediately visible in the D7100 samples.    Early days and limited samples but they look promising.

I guess nobody cares about the body construction or a potentially new sensor...   Surprising given the debates that frequently rage on these forums...

Well .. the Expeed 4 sounds interesting and what it might mean for newer bodies or updates to existing ones.

The sensors are clearly not identical...

They show different total and effective megapixels on Nikon's global website.

What samples immediately show D7100 banding? Not the ones on the Nikon website. And the D7100 wouldn't show banding on any of the samples you linked to for the D5300. For the most part, banding only shows up when the image was shot poorly and processed poorly.

Well it's interesting that Nikon appears to have changed the sample shots!    At the time there was a pic of the inside of a helicopter that had been processed with d-lighting that showed banding inside the cockpit without any further processing.    Here is a thread from the time at mentions it...

samples

Anyone have any thoughts on the D5300 or the samples at the Czech site above?!

Re: Interesting features of the D5300

Yep there are some dark samples on that site and seems to be no banding at all.

This i important. No I don't think that banding is really a huge problem with this sensor but sometimes it could shows, and if they can improve on this (also D7200???) that is very good.

Any more sample images from the D5300 or news on the sensors high iso performance ... something usually leaks out by now!?

Re: Interesting features of the D5300

I wonder who makes the sensor,  I can't really determine how good it is without being able to directly compare it to say the D5200, or D7100.

Well, to answer my own question it appears the new sensor was developed by Nikon themselves, although most likely produced by someone else. Perhaps it's similar to the D3200 sensor.

Nope, not true, there are plenty of examples from the D7100 and 5200 that show banding that could be very annoying in shots that are far from strongly 'pushed'.

I hope not!

Looks like the D5100 potentially still has the image quality benchmark in the 5000 series.

Well presumably it isn't the same sensor as the D3200 even if it's designed by Nikon. Let's give em a chance, and see how it tests out, but yeah the D5100, and D7000 are turning out to be hard acts to follow.

Re: Interesting features of the D5300

One would expect later generation sensors to show meaningful improvement in some way... as the D7100 did for me over my D7000. Are these differences meaningful all the time? No. Are they the same for everyone? No.

Looking at the Czech site images from the D5300 at full posted size, it's very difficult to see where these improvements have been made. I'm not picking up the EXIF data on this images, and that would be interesting.

But hats off to Nikon for consistently putting great sensors, loaded with DR, in their cameras.

The JPEGs look like a noticeable improvement at high iso over the D5200, although I guess hard to say is that down to better JPEG processing due to the EXPEED 4 or a real improvement in the sensor? It will be interesting when they get the RAW files up.
