Powershot and studio flash

I'm a very happy SX1 IS owner who now wants to try external flash and studio lighting. I hope someone can advise me on the best and most cost-effective way to go. I need to start with something that will be compatible with the SX1 IS, obviously, but which will still be compatible when the time comes to move up to DSLR.

Ideally, I want an onboard flash that will trigger two other flashes. I have studied DPReview and other sites and it seems to me that a Canon Speedlite would be most compatible on the camera hotshoe, although I could save cash by having less-expensive slave units, such as Yongnuo.

The budget is not limitless, but I think the Speedlite 600EX-RT and a couple of Yongnuos seem sensible.

Or does anyone have better advice or see problems ahead?

Thanks in advance.
