Imagine Samsung is about to announce the next NX lens and this lens is going be available before Christmas.

What would you like the announced lens to be ?

Re: I'd like the next NX lens to be... [poll]

My personal vote goes for

24mm f1.4 (premium, similar to Fuji 23mm f1.4)

But does it make sense for Samsung to compete directly with Fuji ?

Samsung said a year ago they were planning to "differentiate on the technology". The Galaxy NX has Android, but this is far from sufficient from a photographic point-of-view IMHO.

I remember an old post here entitled "Are we riding a dead horse". That was a long time ago, but it still seems so close...

It was a hard choice between 23mm F1.4 and zoom 16-80 (I am fine with varable aperture 3.5 to 4.5 as well) but in the end my vote goes to zoom.

This is because I really need very fast focusing lens with very good IQ to capture my kids. 18-200 is heavy and does not offer very good image so I seldom use it. On the other side I see myself using fast 23mm quite often as well. 20mm is good but not as good as 30 or 45mm so 23mm would provide wider area with great quality and lots of light. It is with Samsung that I started using primes and abandoned zooms to large extent. However there is number of primes already but no premium zoom.

While I think NX system has a lot of lens whose aperture value is about 2. I would also like to see lens has F1.4, or even F1.2....But maybe it will be both heavy and expensive so that few people like to buy it:-(

Exactly my thinking. There is of course 85mm 1.4 but I would use something on a wide side as well for low light shoting.

16-80, because

that would adress two missing elements at once. A wider zoom that starts at 16mm (the standard 24mm eqv.) and a zoom lens that has better tele-reach. Such a lens is dearly missed for functioning as a travelling/general purpose lens.

And I thing almost all Samsung NX lenses should be as light and small as possible. That is a great strength of the NX system. Of course we need fast lenses too, but I don't want too see overweight Sigma/Tokina-style lenses - that would defeat the purpose of a lightweight mirrorless system.

The 16-80mm f4 is supposed to stabilised as well I think.

Must be stabilised otherwise will be not good for video.

I don't care much about the video aplications of the lens (Samsung isn't too famous about the video features of the cameras either...), but I think everyone presumes that the lens has stabilisation - it will not sell, if it doesn't have OS.

I'd like a single focal length somewhere between 70 and 75 mm with f1.8 aperture, with the same build quality (I.e. light) and optical quality as the 45mm and no bigger than my Pentax 77mm Ltd without stabilisation is just fine. This would pair well with the nx 200 size camera etc. I have the 50-200 and it's (understandingly) a monster compared to every other nx lens I have. Keep it small!

Well I'm going to stick my head above the parapet and say I'd like to see a 300mm or longer lens. Yes I love the relative lightness of the nx system but it needs a longer lens to widen its credibility for those of us who enjoy wildlife and sports photography

Well I feel lonely opting for the 16-50. The longer zoom of the 16-80 would be better of course but a 16-50 should be smaller and lighter.

Actually, the lens would be probably larger than a 16-80... The aperture affects the size a lot.

Re: I'd like the next NX lens to be... [poll]

Maybe Samsung should think out of box with lens like,

  1. 15-60mm F4.0 OIS, 1:2 macro, 4x wide angle zoom lens.
  2. 60-250mm F4.0 OIS, 1:2 macro, 4.2x television zoom lens.
  3. 135mm or 150mm F4.0 OIS, 1:1 macro lens.

The 2 zoom lens with macro ability might seem like duplicating and cancelling the delicated macro lens sales, but they will surely make ppl to think their range are more flexible and creative with double or even triple the lens usage, thus will attract more consumer buy into Samsung NX camera system.

It's new and out of box thinking, but like I've said before, Samsung was not a "traditional old" camera maker, so adopting more newer out of box ideas will surely enable them Moreno potential to grab bigger market share from Canon and Nikon.

I voted for the 24mm. Samsung needs premium prime lenses for nx. The 30mm f2 is a very nice pancake, but is quite slow focusing and, even if quite a fast lens, not the fastest possible. The 20mm is on the slow side, for a prime lens. None of them is equivalent to 35mm in ff terms. A 24 mm f1.4, though bigger (I guess it could be the size of the 45mm) could be:

- equivalent to 35mm

- fast focusing

- 1 step faster than the 30mm and 2 faster than the 20mm

Definitely a winner, for me.

Quite a difficult question, actually, I've be very happy to see any of these, assuming that "optimized for video" doesn't mean a power zoom... Also, a 300mm 2.8 would almost certainly be out of my budget, but let's ignore that for now.

In the end I picked a 50-150mm f2.8, as I think this would make the best combo with my current favourite lens, the 12-24mm, and there is no range of good primes covering this range as there is for the 16-60mm range. Second choice would be a premium 24mm as that's probably my preferred focal length. But yeah, any of these would be good news!

Re: I'd like the next NX lens to be... [poll]

I marked the 50-150, but in reality I would like to have a fast and compact 135mm with OIS. It will fit better in my bag...;)

The tele range > 85mm was up to now rather ignored by Samsung. Please don't say, there is a 50-200! This lens doesn't stand up to the other Samsung lenses I own. At the moment I use with my NX20 mostly my old Nikkor AI 2/135, but better contrast, AF and OIS would be nice. For anything bigger and heavier I prefer a bigger body. I tried once my Tokina 4/100-300 (1.5Kg) freehand with my NX20 because I forgot the quick release plate for the tripod head. Don't! The flimsy body of the NX20 is not really made for such a Lens, but I like the size of the NX20...

My demands

Very high: 24 f/1.4

High: 16-80 f/4

Very high: 50-150 f/2.8 (on the level of Canon 70-200 f/4 on FF )

I'm finding it a bit sad, that the competitors (Sony, Panasonic) are spitting out novelty cameras and innovative lenses every two minutes, meanwhile in Samsungland...

well, we have this nice little poll.

(Of course it doesn't make our current equipment any worse, it's just a sidenote...)
