Is it ok to be in love with Olympus' Silver Lenses?

I am in market for a m4/3 cam , replacing my bulky D5100 as I often leave it home, want to change that. I would probably buy x-E1 given how it has EVF and AS-c sensor but my budget doesn't allow me that plus the FujiNon Lenses are way too pricey.

Damn I got sidetracked. I am considering buy e-PL5  and I LOVE how Silver lenses look like, remind me of my old film rangefinder that adored growing up (Yashica Electro 35). I just wish to ask those who own such lenses if the paint wears off with usage? Given how its not a metal body lens (oh the old days).

I am gonna buy Olympus 25/ 45mm Prime and 14-42mm  II Kit to go with the E-PL5 Body. Would you recommend investing in Silver lenses?

Re: Is it ok to be in love with Olympus' Silver Lenses?

Only one of my three Olympus-Lenses (12/2.0, 45/1.8, 75/1.8) is plastic, and the silver-tone on this one (45/1.8) is slightly different from the other two, which are metal. But it is the oldest of the three lenses and my most used. It has around 10.000pics taken during the last 2 years and still shows no sign of wear.

One thing I liked especially was the thermal response in Africa during safari-trips, the silver lenses stay cooler than the black ones which become pretty hot during daytime-drives.

Oh, great. Guess that is why 45/1.8 is so cheap given how well it is said to performe. Guess I will make 75/1.8 my third lens in future then.

Hmm, that makes sense, I am from India albeit from the colder part in general but I
guess that makes the decision easier a bit. Thanks

No. They're fashioned to be used grudgingly. (NT)

I love the silver lenses. I bought the silver version of the OMD because I decided it suited the retro styling better, and I love using the silver lenses on it. A friend of mine bought a black OMD and all the lenses in black. He's happy too. They remind him of the Leica gear he once owned.
We're both happy.

Silver is sublime

I truly admire the look of my silver lenses on my black E-PL5. My M.Zuiko 12mm f/2.0 with matching lens hood and silver B+W UV filter is an eye-catcher. I've garnered a number of comments from non-photographers about the looks of my camera.

And remember, style trumps substance in photography. If you can look good doing it, the image doesn't matter all that much.

Is this the love that dares not speak its name? :D

In general, one has to be careful with love for one's camera; especially, with silver. Carried to excess, the owner and camera can end up resembling one another.

Pet peeve... if you aren't making money with something, or it isn't appreciating in value while you have it... it isn't an investment. It's just you buying something.

So now that's out of the way – just buy whatever you like. It's your camera, so buy whatever lenses you want for it.

Decisions by committee shouldn't be made when it only affects you.

I like silver, so I have a silver EM5, silver 45 1.8, silver 14-150 but a black 9-18, as they don't make it in silver!

yes

I have the silver EPL5 and bought the 45mm and 17mm f1.8 in silver to match

They look gorgeous on the camera, especially the 17mm which happens to have the better build and coating than the 45mm

I have the impression that the 17mm coating would last longer than the 45mm

Saying so these lenses by no way match the build of the old OM lenses so one would still have to handle them with care

Since I have a black EVF it doesn't match quite well with the silver body

The silver body + lens combo may also stand out too much when shooting street, especially under a bright shiny sun; thank G... the camera is not the size of a DSLR!

many times folks have asked me what kind of camera it was? film or digital?

For the EPL5 looks just like the Contax G of old

I'd foresee myself owning 2 lines of MFT bodies

Silver Pens + silver fixed focal lenses

Black E-M1 + black zooms

Cheers,

They are beautiful..

and make for a good-looking outfit. You can see the difference in the color of the 45/1.8 in this image..

NO!

Beware of silver lenses.

1. They have notoriously worse IQ than black, professional lenses. The reason is their bad Karma.

2. The Karma might even be transfered to you and no one will ever love you, while you use these lenses.Peter

Re: NO!

2 The bad Kama transferred before I bought Olympus!!!!!

1 I had a black 14-150 but the silver one is slightly sharper, however, this is only discernible on A3+ prints!

I absolutely love silver lenses, in fact they look wonderful on my EM1. But I do wish they had brought out a silver version of this camera.

Indeed. I've never understood why people insist on cameras having to be black. Do they only drive black, utilitarian cars, too? I mean after all, a car is "just a tool" just like a camera.

Sadly, photographic fashion is extremely calcified and traditional. Look at the crap Pentax has taken for daring to offer cameras in different colors.

I'm not saying every camera should be available in red and pink, but silver is certainly a nice flourish from time-to-time.

Besides, I bet people on the street would agree to be photographed by a pink and orange camera much more readily than a sinister giant black pro jobber.
