Not happy with G16 as an upgrade

Re: Not my findings

My RAW images show a slight improvement at higher ISO when comparing my 15 to my 16. Add the extra operational speed of the G16, it was a no brainer to me. It replaced my G15 instead or going back to the retailer.

Hi, have you noticed any difference in dynamic range between the G15 and G16?

I'm torn between g16 or rx100mkii. You state you had had sony, now you will have both, can you give me a brief pro con ?

or shall I go gx7 or oly p5

?

I have the same dilemma as you, except that my other options are GX7 and EM5 or EM1(though too expensive)...and it's hard to pick lenses

I have been looking forward to upgrading my G12 for one with faster operation and better IQ especially in low light. It seems like the G series is lagging behind its competition in the P&S segment.

One of the first reviews, but I think more will agree with it

But it says:

"On the face of it, the G16 may not look like much of an upgrade over its predecessor. The heart of any camera, the lens and processor combination, remain as before and it doesn't look all that different from the G15.

But look beneath the surface and there's plenty to get excited about. First, there's the new Digic 6 processor, providing faster AF and reducing shutter lag, which makes the G16 a faster surer camera than its predecessor and greatly increases your chances of getting a shot in situations where speed matters. It also provides the G16 with very respectable continuous shooting that outclasses most of its competitors and is a huge advance on the mediocre burst shooting offered by its predecessor"

Seems pretty positive. But I'll keep using my G15. Perhaps you should upgrade from G12 to G15

I'll wait to see what the G17 or P7900 comes with

My major requirement for upgrading my G12 will be to get MUCH better IQ, not just faster processing and faster AF time. I don’t think the G15 or G16 has THAT much better IQ or DR to justify an upgrade yet.

I’m going to wait for the G17 to see if it has much better IQ at higher ISO's, sensor size, sensor efficiency, longer focal range, weather sealing, an EVF like the P7800, articulating display (like they used to have), touch screen, bounce flash, panorama mode. I don’t expect ALL of these features, but would like to see the majority of them included, especially a larger/better sensor. I will also be keeping an eye on what Nikon comes out with in the P7900 since it has a better/sharper/longer lens than the G15/16. I don’t do much low light shooting, mostly outside in sunny south Florida, so more reach is important to me.

I also think you are making a very wise decision to keep your G15 and wait to see what the G17 comes with, just like the majority of people who voted in this pole.

Any major improvement would likely take a larger sensor. And that would mean a larger camera -- or a slower lens -- since optics scale with sensor size. I was pleased when Canon decided to go with faster optics in the G15. I'd also like wider (24 mm vs. 28 mm) which is probably doable with the G format and size. But the f/1.8-2.8 selection was good because it keeps ISO down in most shooting situations.

Re: Not happy with G16 as an upgrade

I bought G16,

i am am pleased, it's nice to handle, nice to shoot, takes nice crisp images, seems ,ok, in low light, but it is a compact.

dissapointed with RAW , can't open files in cs5, and canon don't ship DPP ?

i sold all my dslr equip, as I no longer shoot for work, and wanted a travel cam, this is perfect for what I want, even gx7 and oly was too bulky with lenses, evf, flash etc etc.

does it do what I could with dslr, NO of course not, but it is a great machine, portraits are awesome with 1.8 !

movies good,

Can't work out time lapse?..anyone?

i would say 90% happy,

nick

Yes surly I agree with you I'm also will be waiting for G17 even it cost extra but IQ is a critical factor now day there is many compact brand has released a compact camera able to do good job with iso up to 1600 even more ,dynamic range is the another factor that should canon concern specifically Sony sensors are included in many cameras with very good dynamic range over 14 EV I think canon should give up from magic lantern philosophy

Re: Not my findings

I am also delighted with the G16 which replaces my much-loved G9.

I didn't reply to the highly-biased questionnaire because it didn't ask 2 questions: 1) Bought one and like it and 2) bought one and don't like it.

My G7 start to fail on image.
Image turns in violet colors. The camera also misses some screws...
So the G17 will be my next camera.
A good update?
