Whats the best cheap lens for landscape?

I was gonna get a K5 II and a Sigma 10-20mm F4.5-6 EX DC for just under £1000 but with the new K3 out soon im thinking of waiting and have it as a more long term 8-10 years investment....hopefully! whats a good cheap lens for landscape photography? I really liking the spec of the K3 and whilst im not as good and most of you guys im doing ok. Ill eventually use it for F1 with a Sigma 500mm lens so think long term better off compromising on the lens to start with

Hi,

It depends what you mean by "best" and "cheap".

There is no best.  It depends how you see the landscape scenes before you and want to compose from reality. Pentax offers prime lenses from a 14mm (though the 15mm/4 is a landscape favorite) through to 100mm which might regularly be used as landscape and nature lenses, and you can go wider or longer if you like.  Primes offer the best quality and would suit the K3 better than cheap zooms, but they are typically more expensive.

In zooms, it's a bit more complicated because they overlap.  The DA18-55 kit lens (get the WR version for outdoor use) is the most economic choice, but would, I think, be rather a modest lens for the K3's capabilities.  The DA16-45mm/4 is a better lens and is also useful in having the wider angle at the start of the zoom range.  If your budget runs to it, the DA*16-50/2.8 is well respected by outdoor users.  The DA17-70 adds a bit of range.  The DA18-135 adds a lot more and is WR.  I'd suggest reading some reviews of all these lenses and checking out the posts of members here and on other sites.

Sorry, I haven't entertained pricing any of these options - it depends entirely on where you live in the world and who you deal with.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Cheers, Rod

Re: Whats the best cheap lens for landscape?

.....Sigma 10-20 and I have the Sigma 17-50, the Pentax DA 12-24 I have also, (but still trying to figure out wether I have a dud or just not using it correctly yet??)

Failing that as far as cheap is concerned, the beauty of Pentax is the use of old Film glass, which means manual focus, but hey, you are talking landscape.....some of the nice Pentax, Sigma and Rikenon 24mm style lenses are stunners.

Cheers guys. should of also added that when i take photographs i was using a equivalent FF focal length of 28mm. that was because it was a prime and was my best lens. I'll have a look around at some film lenses in the mean time

did you consider K-30, I actually use it much more than my K5 ( do not have K-5II) and yes, seriously looking into K-3

yes old Sigma non HSM 10-20 very good , use it & love it

Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 MACRO great lens, non HSM , love it, my main workhorse , plenty of them around used, under AU$200

Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 MACRO 'C' HSM new model, absolute marvel!, it will be my new workhorse,

considering now Sigma 8-16, apparently great, never used one, ~AU$628

Cheers the K30 was on my radar but i was advised that the K5II is better for Motorsport? If the K30 comes done below £300 price it's in my house today! then i could get the Sigma 10-20mm the F3,5 version.

The Sigma 8-16mm was on my list cos i love wide angle but i keep thinking would i use anything below 10mm? im not sure but then again never had anything that small in focal.

Would you say the K30 is good for Motorsport?
