EM1 / GX7 Who will upgrade to a bit better sensor ? (explain why if you want) Poll.
2

Well, it seems that the two best sensors will be on the Olympus EM1 and on the Panasonic Lumix GX7, the same for the processing engines.

Of course these cameras also have other attractive features but now we are only talking about the sensor.

That said who will spent money for a bit better sensor and who will keep the current camera/s.

I will buy the GX7 for the sensor and features and hope to save some money for lenses.

Of course better sensor is an attraction.  But currently I have a G10 and, if I shoot raw, I can get remarkably nice images out of ISO 1600, and really excellent images out of ISO 800.  Whatever noise there is is luminance, and cleans up very easily.  This may not sound great but I came from a super zoom that was at least as noisy at 200 as the G10 is at 800; and was certainly noisier (including chroma blotchiness) at 400 than the G10 is at 1600.  So I'm easy to please.  And, now I have an f/1.4 lens ... that helps too!

So at the moment we have a G6, with a fully articulated LCD and I think a better sensor than the G10, and the GX7, with a tiltable LCD and EVF, and it seems a better sensor than even the G6 ... for about $300 more.

I do not make money off photography.  I like the shrunken DSLR form factor.  I like its larger hand grip.  I like the built in EVF (I am not convinced about the field-sequential one on the GX7 .. which they claim is over 2 MP but actually it's 1024x768, about 3/4 of a MP, but field sequential so they triple that to say "if we were using a normal LCD we could claim it was over 2MP".  Yeah, if it was, you could; but it's not. And as the review says, field sequential can "tear".).

So I'm looking at the G6 and waiting for some opportune time to buy one.  I'd love it if it had the GX7's sensor, but it doesn't, and that sensor is not enough to attract me to a different form factor, higher cost, different EVF technology platform.

I would like to upgrade from e-m5 to e-m1 but I don't have the fonds at the moment. Probably later. If the early reviewers are right the new sensor seems to be significantly better, one or two steps, which really isn't bad. Together with pfaf and better ergonomy this is reason enough I think. If I only had the money....On the other hand, I surely will get the 12-40. This lens is exactly what I have missed in m4/3. I'll get it even if I have to sell most of my lenses to get fonds for it. I think it'll be perfect on my e-m5. Until I eventually get a e-m1!

When a new camera is out, there's a lot of marketing hype around it : better sensor, faster AF, ...

But often, after independent tests has been done, it is showed to be only marketing hype.

About sensors, I would wait for DXO ratings. I know DXO doesn't tell the whole story (only RAW numbers) but it's the best source to see if there's a real improvement or not.

In the meantime, I'll stay with my current and very enjoyable cameras (GH2 and EM-5).

I'm going to stick with my current OMD because I'm very happy with it. I like the look of the new body though. I like the built-in grip. My guess is I'll skip this generation and look to the next.

Aleo,

Thanks for this survey, but the choices do not reflect one underlying variable so I could  have checked more than one item.  Didn't have that option.

Thanks for participate.

True we only know they are a bit better from some samples and previews, but I hope soon we will see full reviews of these two cameras.

Hi Frank,

But you can tell here what is the phrase that reflects better your choices, I can put it on the thread, maybe others will appreciate.

I hope to upgrade a Lumix G5 to a GH3, GX7 or EM1. The G5 IQ is pretty good, so although I want to improve that, a bigger aspect is ergonomics, including WiFi. Of these, the deciding factor may well be that I need to use the viewfinder with glasses on (eyesight is beyond range of diopter adjusters.)

The EM1 design is really more attractive.

From those the G5 is a very good camera and wins on the price.

Any you choose will be a fine camera to have.

5 years or a fire sale to upgrade

I'm happy with my GH3/GX1 combination for my needs. I'll watch fire-sale prices and maybe pick up an EM5 when it's being blown out, but I don't expect to do a significant body upgrade in the next 3 years.

IQ from my GX1 is already plenty good enough for detailed 16" x 21" landscape prints. I'll upgrade to the GX7 for the better grip and built-in EVF.
