I need a lens case for EF 500mm II

The bag that comes with the lens is a little impractical to carry out in the woods. I need a more comfortable bag. Which one should I buy?

Thank you for helping my to find!

Re: I need a lens case for EF 500mm II

I used to have a LowePro LensTrekker 600 for my 500+1D Mark IV but sold it when I bought a GuraGear Kiboko 30L backpack.  The GuraGear was so much lighter and easier to use than the LowePro that I sold the LensTrekker and another backpack.  Now I use the GuraGear for almost everything except when I am traveling with only one camera and 1-2 lenses. But check them both out; the LowePro may be just what you are looking for.

Tamrac makes a nice backpack
2

The Tamrac 5793 backpack is big enough to put a pro body with a 1.4x extender attached to that lens. It was designed to work with a 600mm on a pro body, but the 500 is a little shorter, so you can add an extender if you want to. It is not ultra light weight once the lens and body is in there, but it is very sturdy and a relatively comfortable backpack with padded shoulder straps and a waist belt. Includes tripod straps and foot pocket. Balanced well enough to set on its bottom without falling over. The zipper design make lens access simple and painless. It's also reasonably priced.

I use it primarily as a case for the lens and body that I throw in the trunk of my car, but wouldn't hesitate to put it on for a long hike into an interesting location.

I bought the Kenesis for mine. The smallest and lightest bag that will hold that lens. (With 1.4 attached.)

I've use the Lowepro LensTrekker 600, Think Tank Glass Taxi and the Think Tank Glass Limo.  IMHO, all equally comfortable.

For the ability to carry additional stuff (additional body and lenses, flashes, etc), the Lowepro LensTrekker 600 wins hands-down.  It can carry the 500 with body attached, has ample room inside for some other stuff and you can attach a lot of Lowepro lens cases.  But, I doubt that it will fit in all airline overhead bins.  I sold it.

The Think Tank Glass Taxi wins for the smallest overall size - it just fits a 500/4L without a body attached.  You can add only one "sliplock" accessory to the Glass Taxi, although you can add a belt and add several accessory cases to that.  But the Glass Taxi + belt + cases is unwieldy.  It got stolen.

The Think Tank Glass Limo is similar to, but larger than the Glass Taxi.  It can hold a 500/4L with body attached + 3 accessory cases directly.  You can also add a belt + more cases.  This is what I use today.

Go for the Tamrac, its a quality bag, I can just get my 1D and 600 with a 1.4 tc in it, I previously used a lenstrekker with my sigmonster, and this is far better

Lens coat is coming out with a new bag which promises a telescoping top for 600 and up.

Absolutely agree if one values the ease of getting the lens/camera combination in and out of the bag/backpack. Plenty of add-on storage options. Excellent lens/camera protection, and a well thought out product line.
