When to change Canon Lens Ring USM ( Ring Motor)? Avoid Unnecessary expense

Hi All,

Recently I had given my Canon 28-135 mm USM IS Lens for servicing. Had some visible fungus on the front lens element. Had no problem with the auto focus and no problems even the quality of photos. But in certain range and light conditions the lens auto focus kept picking up the focus points on left side.

As such the servicing and cleaning should have done the work. I also got the initial estimate from the canon service center around ($ 50-60) as service charge. They had checked the auto focus and all worked well.

Suddenly they msged me saying the amount would be more than double as the Ring USM  and Power Diaphram needs to changed too. As far I understand the USM motor only needs to be changed when the auto focus or motor lock problem is there. They told me that the fungus was all over the motor and etc.. and hence these parts need to be replaced.

Have called them back and told them that I am not interested in such part replacements. As far as I know the USM Motor would have not worked if such a grave problem was there..,

Lets see... I am waiting for what new story they come up with...
