Samsung NX300 45mm 3D lens stuck at F/6.0 when in 3D?
Sep 1, 2013
I've been lucky enough to buy a Samsung NX300 (18-55mm & 50-200mm) for use on a holiday in a few weeks, and I splashed out on the 45mm 3D lens as well. The 3D lens isn't behaving quite the way I'd expect: Can any other owners please let me know how their experiences compare to mine?
If the lens is in 2D mode, I can switch the camera to "M" mode, set the aperture down to F/1.8, and adjust the ISO settings, too. But as soon as I flick the switch to "3D", the camera stops letting me adjust the aperture or ISO settings -- those options disappear from the menu. It shows me that the aperture has been set to F/6.0. If I'm indoors in the evening, it switches the ISO to 1600, and the image on the screen is very dark and noisy. I'm often unable to focus or take a picture.
3D performance is good when I'm outside during daylight, still at F/6.0. The pictures look great on my 3D TV.
This doesn't seem right: The lens specifications say that it can do F/3.5 when in 3D mode.
I've tried body firmware 1.20 and 1.30. Lens firmware 1.00 seems to be the only version available. I've tried turning it off and on again. Booting up in either 2D or 3D mode. Etc.
Are any other owners out there who have a similar experience? Or, can any of you confirm that you can adjust aperture and ISO while in 3D mode?
I've phoned Samsung support in my country (Australia) but the camera is very new here. The fellow who helped me first had to look up whether the NX300 could do 3D... and then he told me to mail both camera and lens into a service centre for a few weeks. I imported the lens from the UK, because it's not due out in my country until after my holiday. I guess I was asking for trouble. There's nobody local with first-hand experience of what I should expect.
If other owners reckon I have faulty equipment, I guess I'll do that after I get back. If it's the same for everyone, maybe I should be waiting for new firmware. (The lens seems perfect in every other way. It's happily taking F1.8 2D photos, or daylight 3D photos, so I wonder whether it's a firmware issue that is affecting lots of people.)
Thanks!
Tyler.
