Canon 100-400L jumps on image-stabilization

Hi,

I just purchased a 100-400L. When I half press, the image jumps in the viewfinder, then 2-3 seconds after releasing the button, the image jumps again. I was told this is normal for long focal length lenses with image stabilization. It is more obvious out at 400mm.  It does not happen when IS is turned off.

Is this normal?

P.

Up to a point. The image will jump a bit as IS starts and finishes, but if it jumps repeatedly you have a problem. I have just had to send mine to Canon to fix this.

Re: Canon 100-400L jumps on image-stabilization

I have a Sigma 120-400 OS & there is no "jump" with the stabilization. My 70-200f/4 IS is a bit noisy, but again, no jump. The Tamron 70-300VC jumps when stabilization is activated & freezes the image in the viewfinder, but this is a feature of this lens. Methinks you should get it looked at.

Common on Canon IS Binoculars

I own a couple different Canon IS Binoculars and this is common.  Not sure why.

Re: Canon 100-400L jumps on image-stabilization

It ONLY jumps at the 1/2 press (or full press) and 2-3 seconds later (when I assume it stops ISing).  It does not jitter in-between.

My Canon 18-135 IS does not do this. Any ideas why the L needs to?

Re: Canon 100-400L jumps on image-stabilization

When IS engaged on long focal lens, it jerk a little then you can hear whine on the coil but not jump.

You are describing the issue i used to have with my 1-4. I was having sharpness problem and thought so the jump may be normal until i tried on friend's unit that just brought new and was much sharper than mine. It jerks a little but not to level that my unit was exhibited. Sent it in and Canon fixed it with IS coil issue.

Same thing with my 500mm, it doesn't jump.

Re: Canon 100-400L jumps on image-stabilization

This is quite normal even though some lenses do this and some don't. It is of concern if it KEEPS jumping after it has stabilized, but what you describe is fine.
