HENRY'S CANCELLING ORDERS on 45mm f/1.8 (purchased at $199 sale price)

OK guys, those lenses that were on special a while ago, at amazing prices, are finally shipping.

And what I had feared, is happening. A while back (a month or two?) Henrys was having a sale with amazing prices on Samsung lenses, including the 45mm f1.8 - both the regular and 3d versions - they were $199 and $299(I think) respectively. I ordered the $199 one.

I received a notification from Henrys billing department that the order was rejected - yet I have more than enough paypal balance to cover it, and my bank account it's linked to isn't empty either!

So, I'm creating this tread, so that others who are experiencing this can share, and also for us to keep each other up to date on the evolution of the situation - to see whether Henry's fixed it or not. Finally, a united voice holds more clout than us divided, right? And, if Henry's fixes it, it is only fair (and beneficial to all), that they be given proper credit for the resolution of this problem.

I called and emailed to complain about the shipping delay and finally got it shipped today, 6 weeks after ordering. But I paid credit and had it shipped locally, so if you paid via paypal and/or shipped internationally you might be out of luck.

Saw in another thread: Samsung is selling them at $199

https://www.samsung.com/us/photography/digital-cameras-accessories/EX-S45ANB/US

Maybe you can use that as justification for them to honour your purchase. If you are in the USA maybe you can just buy from Samsung.

Good luck

I received the same email. I emailed orders@henrys.com and they agreed to resubmit my payment request to paypal. I received an email from paypal, and reauthorized payment. I have since received my shipping notification. All this ocurred within a 24 hour period. I suggest you contact Henry's. I have always found them to be a reliable vendor.

Did the same. Received shipping notification. Paid less than before, as Canadian dollar fell since then. 206 USD total, including shipping.

You can't buy it from Samsung. Samsung points me to Wal-mart (which means tax), and also they are out of stock.

After I emailed them, received new invoice
1

OK guys, I guess you're right. I emailed them (and posted this thread minutes after), and today, I received a new paypal invoice. I paid it and am awaiting my tracking info.

From what I can read, some of you have gone through this already before I posted my message. That is nice, because it tells us that Henry's didn't need our push to do the right thing.  What was wrong, however, is they obviously knew the paypal authorizations expired, and could have been pro-active in letting people know what is going on, so things go more smoothly - instead of relying on a bunch of distraught customers contacting them.

It's probably due to the fact that a pending payment through paypal expires after a month or so.  But still, the way it was done - an outright transaction declined notice, and nothing more - caused some Henry's customers to question their integrity or reliability of their systems at the very least.  Hopefully they learned from this and will correct their system procedures/flow.

Re: After I emailed them, received new invoice

Got my lens today.
Tip for Henry's US shoppers: make sure you charge paypal in CAD, then use no foreign transaction fee credit card, it will save you 2.9%. For this lens it was $6

that is determined by how you set up your paypal account - primary in USD or CDN$

Not in US. When charging paypal account in foreign currency, there is a conversion option to do it with either paypal, or your credit card. If you do it with credit card, then you can chose credit card with no foreign transaction fee, as paypal conversion fee is 2.9%.

2.9% is highway robbery! screen-print tip?

that is ludicrous!  ebay-paypal are the biggest scammers ever!  the fees are just horrendous.  anyways, that's off-topic.  but thanks for the tip - I'll look out for that next time I pay to see if I get the option. Perhaps next time you do a transaction like this, you can do a screen crop to show us what button to push to select that?

You don't have to worry when buying from Henry's, since you're in Canada. Henry's charges in CAD, you credit card is in CAD. No fees for you. For me they charge in CAD, buy my CC is in USD, so to take advantage of exchange rate, I need to use specific card with no FTF.

UPDATE - & - have you received a cancellation notice?
1

I'm pleased to report that the lens arrived.

If you are new to the thread, and have received a notice that your transaction was declined, just email Henry's to the return customer service email that appears on your original order notification or reply-to.

The seem to promptly handle these situations.

I emailed them (when this thread was started), a day later got a new paypal invoice, paid it. A day later, got my advance shipping notification. And yesterday, the lens was delivered.

Good luck, and enjoy!

BTW, I'm posting all these updates, in an effort to protect Henry's reputation. If they treat customers right, they deserve it. They did make a mistake, in allowing this confusion to be created in the first place, by these notifications of transaction rejection being sent out (because it was a paypal 30-day order expiration issue, nothing to do with your account or order) - but we are all humans, and can't condemn someone for not being perfect all of the time - especially in this case where it was an exception situation hard to foresee given the delays from Samsung.

I understand why you are posting the updates - its actually very decent of you to do so, as Henrys employ people and it is all to easy to damage a reputable firm's reputation on the internet. So it's good that you post this update.

The good news is you have your 45! It's a very good lens. The hood works with the 30mm as well without vignetting.

I hate the hood - it screws onto the filter thread, instead of a quick twist-snap-on.  I find it impractical because it makes the whole camera assembly large for when putting away into a bag. Removing it will quickly wear the plastic thread, and I don't want to leave it on, because I don't know how strong the thread mount on the lens is in case of impact, with the leverage given the hood's length.

I use a rubber lens hood that I got for a few bucks on ebay.  it is for a 46mm thread, with a 46mm-43mm ring adapter.  On the 30mm lens it is precisely the right size for no vignetting (narrow it at the corners with your fingers and it'll vignet, that's how I checked), and it works quite nicely on the 45mm as well.  The rubber hood collapses, and makes for easy storage into a camera bag without unscrewing the lens hood.

I only snapped a couple of pictures of my daughter indoors last night. First thing I noticed is that the white-balance presets in the camera seem to work better with this lens, than with the 30mm. (I do have a recent version of firmware in my camera). There is a paper in the packaging telling you to update the firmware to get correct color balance.  So the natural skin tones seem to be correct right out of the box, whereas the 30mm required adjusting to most images.

The second thing that I noticed, is that the depth of field is rather narrow at 1.8, which is a good thing. On the other hand, care must be taken to make sure your focus is spot on - taking her head from the side, I got focus on strands of hair and her eyes were out of focus - this showed me how narrow it is, and that I will have to get used to this. I'll have to do more playing around with it to get more used to it and the camera combination. (I nave an NX20)
