who uses a Canon type II tele plus the 52WII polarizer plug in filter?

Hi guys,

I'd be very interested in sample images and your thoughts on using the 52WII circular polarizer on the 300 / 400 f/2.8 II or the 500 / 600 f/2.0 II (thoughts on the type (I) teles are also welcome.

I own the 300 f/2.8 L IS USM II and think of spending the 200 bucks for the filter

(sorry only the above mentioned lenses are of interest to me)

I have following questions:

1) How much is the image quality affected?

2.) How much light do you loose - is it in the range of 1-2 stops?

3.) Do you use it often or is it a waste of money?

4.) In which situations do you use the polarizer?

5.) Is the lens still water resistant with the filter in place?

6.) How good does the mechanism to control the effect work in the field?

thx for your answers in advance!!!

i do have the filter you mentioned for my 300 2.8II but i haven't used it yet, this may not be the answer you are looking for but i'll be interested in other photogs answer who have used it, as well i will let you know when i use mine but i am not sure when at this time!

cheerz.

was expecting that

(would be ridiculous to have several differnt designs for such a simple filter (holder) system)

Re: who uses a Canon type II tele plus the 52WII polarizer plug in filter?

I use it from time to time on the 300 and 500mm mark I lenses. It is helpfull to reduce haze and reflection if the angle towards the sun is fitting. Its operation (i.e. rotation) is easy via a small toothed weel on its side. The light loss was not measured but in the range of typical polarizer which is 1.5 EV or so...

thx - do you happen to have sample images?

Re: who uses a Canon type II tele plus the 52WII polarizer plug in filter?

Sorry no, would not be easy to single them out of my ten-thousands of pics since it is a "non-reporting" filter holder...   If I don't forget it I can do some extra new ones for you...

Oh sure - non reporting - I know - are there any filters that are reported?

Would be great if you could post some.

Re: who uses a Canon type II tele plus the 52WII polarizer plug in filter?

thx!!

Looks more like 2 - 3 stops loss of light

good example to see the difference!!

Re: who uses a Canon type II tele plus the 52WII polarizer plug in filter?

the number of stops is tricky. for this I would have to picture unpolarized light which would not show the strong contrast and color enhancement as in the example... Unfortunately I was to quick this morning with the focus (focusing on different parts of the tree) so it is hard to judge the effect on sharpness but when looking carefully - because of the optical depth of the tree structures -  one can see that sharpness is not effected by the filter...
