SX270 same lens as SX 240/260?

Last year I bought a SX260 and was highly satisfied just until I noticed a couple of scratches on the front lens that became deeper and deeper.

The check at the Canon Service Center confirmed that these scratches were caused by the moving lens cover elements that are supposed to protect the lens when the camera ist turned off.

In fact these blades got in touch with the front lens element every time the camera tryed to extend the lens barrel and hit a object that stopped the start up and told the user to restart again. Since the lens cover elements were not properly manufactured they caused vertical scratches.

Canon replaced the complete Lens element of the camera - under warranty.

Since I didn't need the GPS and knew a freind who was looking for it, I sold the fixed SX260 and bought a second hand SX240 before my holiday trip in June.

Now - guess what happened. The SX240 tried to turn on by mistake twice while still in the bag and - one fat scratch right in the middle of the frontlens stopped me from using this Canon Powershot again because every bright light causes a darkened spot in the middle of the picture, that is noticably visible on landscape shots with bluesky.

I was very disappointed and had to send the SX240 back again.

Now - it looks as if the new SX 270/280 have the same lens as the SX 240/260 - but is it really identical - means has anybody made such a bad experience with scratches on the front lens from the lens cover of a SX270/280? Maybe the owners should take a closer look on their lenses because it is possible that the scratchs start hardly noticeble and become deeper and deeper.

My 260 now has a short visible scratch on the front lens, it doesn't seem to be causing a problem yet, but it does sound like a potential problem.

How did yours turn on by itself, I find the 260 on/off switch to be extremely hard to operate.

I am not sure if the 270/280 lens is the same but I suspect it is by the similair specs.

I had the SX260 in a Crumpler Neoprenbag and was carrying this in my pocket.

There it is fairly easy to turn the camera on by pressing the replay button.

Once turned on in replay it just needs a soft touch to the shutterbutton on top and the lens comes out. Bad luck if it is still in the pocket.

For the SX240 I used a belt bag. Same story - you crab it either front and back or top and bottom. So it may happen that you press the big start button on the top corner or do it the same way as with the SX260 and incidently hit first the replay and the cover of the bag hits the shutterbutton - and the lens comes out before the camera has left the bag completely.

No such marks seen on my SX280 (about 10 days old) examined with magnifier. From what I can see there is a reasonable clearance between the cover blades and the front lens.

Also I've had no issues with the on-off switch functioning as expected. It does take a sustained push of a second or less -- which makes sense since its location does expose it to accidental pushes and having the lens deploy while in a case could damage it.

Thanks for this. The new models have a significantly better shaped and positioned on/off button. This will surely help to avoid accidential start ups.

I really like this series. It is the best pocketable long zoom available. Hardly wider than my always with me S95 and I hope Canon can solve the problem.

SX260, same scratch situation here, I believe.

Gray-ish dark spot at 12 o'clock, 1/5 of the way down from top of picture. Visible vertical "something" on the lens, 1/8 of an inch long...

Does no show when in mid to high zoom, or in Movie mode (which is what I like about the SX260, until I grow up, I guess..!)

I never approached any manufacturer for warranty claim, but I may need to do that.

Can my brick-and-mortar good-size independent shop help me?

Sorry to hear about that. The spot will mainly be visibly on small aperture, bright wideangle shots.

Not sure what the warranty in your country says. Go to your Canon website. There should be advice how to handle such complaints. Good luck.
