How is that a bad thing?

People like that look, and Fuji didn't screw it up, inside or out.  I don't see a problem

I guess you missed the word "ever" in the OP heading.

Old things can be beautiful too.

Olympus OM-1 and Nikon FM (nt)

I'm not talking about functionality, just aesthetic beauty.

I wonder if there should be categories since function controls basic form in many cases.

In the SLR category, I don't think ANY DSLR can stand up in terms of beauty to the old Canon FT-QL or the Olympus OM-1.

Ugliest GOOD camera (for its time)? Argus C3

Beautiful cameras?! They're for taking pics, not taking pics of them. You mention some obscure Canon model that maybe 27 folks owned. Better DSLRs are very functional and customizable which makes them beautiful to me. How customizable were the old Canon film SLRs??? - they weren't! I owned a few of them. Times are great now compared to the dinosaur days of SLR film hell, though theres a lot of useless fluff appearing on digi-cams too.

Its like an artist that admires his new brushes versus actually using them.

I would only buy a beautiful camera to display in my curio cabinet. I do not really care what my regular camera looks like. Nobody ever looked at any of my photos and said 'but what does your camera look like?'

People who buy cameras because they think that they're beautiful, and then excuse and ignore problems with the camera because they like the appearance so much, those are the people who need a reality check.

Is my Canon 7D beautiful? I appreciate it for what it can do, not how it looks.

Admit it, the 7D does look good. Especially with the grip. Fits my hands like a glove and is well designed/layed out. Nothing puny or small or fake about it. When they make a 5D with a built in flash, thats what I'll upgrade to.

Ubi.

Re: What is the most beautiful camera ever made?

It is interesting to see that at least two others mentioned the Nikon F6, as I had. This prompted me to re-examine the F6, so I looked at my Nikkors, selected the quite interesting and compact 16mm 2.8D Fisheye, and mounted it upon one of my F6 cameras. Yes, this looked quite beautiful; much more so than with the comparatively unattractive 50mm 1.4G in place. Indeed, the camera/lens combination, itself, can be art. Life is good!

I wear a badge and pistol, and, primarily with 7D cameras, shoot evidentiary images at night, which incorporates elements of portrait, macro, still life, landscape, architecture, PJ, and occasional action.

I agree. It would have been so easy for Fuji to get this wrong, with a shameless brick-like copy that had no style, but no, Fuji made the X100 look really beautiful, and function quite well. Perhaps not all photographers are artists, but photography is art, so a camera's style can be really important to a significant portion of shooters. I do not yet own a Fuji, but appreciate the styling.

One of my field 4x5 cameras is wood, with brass fittings. Unfortunately, no one has been able to ID who made it (I took it to several camera shows, and the best guess is that it is Japanese.). But when I've set that camera up--at the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Angkor Wat, etc.--other pro photographers come over to look at it and to ask where I got it. (Answer: at a thrift shop in Cape Town, S. Africa, years ago). Honestly, I rarely work with it anymore . . . the more modern field 4x5 are easier to use and set up. . . but I have to admit that it's a thing of beauty.

Do you see it here? South Africa makes Sanderson a good bet. I have a tropical, which I still use (with modern lenses, adapted with Graflok back)

Linhof Technika, Contax 645, Nikon F with original pentaprism, not photomic would be my favorites.

Ebony view cameras are incredible, too.

My vote for clunky would go to the Realist.

Re: What is the most beautiful camera ever made?

I think the original Polaroid Land Camera (bellows) was quite a beautiful camera. My own personal favorite of my own (which I still sometimes use) is the Minolta SRT 102...it's made like a tank, and just about as heavy for it's size. Simplicity and functionality. No need for a battery, if you've got a meter or can remember the sunny 16 rules.

What do you all know...

"Look, Turner, here's your leading lady." The man smiled
up at Jane Hamilton, who smiled back, her wide blue eyes clear and perfect, each iris ringed with the minute gold lettering of the Zeiss Ikon logo.
...
Turner looked at her. She was twenty, four years his junior, and earned roughly nine times his annual salary in a given week She was blonde, her hair cropped short for the series role, deeply tanned, and looked as if she was illuminated from within by sunlamps. The blue eyes were inhumanly perfect optical instruments, grown in vats in Japan.
She was both actress and camera, her eyes worth several million New Yen, and in the hierarchy of Sense/Net stars, she barely rated."

Nikon FM3e is the best looking camera I saw. Unfortunately I lost the chance to buy it when I had it in my hands and finally when I decided to buy it I found none: Nikon had decided to stop manufacture it!
