Still Loving my D300 after 1 year

Well it's been a touch over a year since I grabbed a D300 from KEH in Bargain condition http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/41835136  ..

1 Year 65K shots and no issues through rain, snow mud and low tides... Even with my cheap 3rd party grip and en-el4 battery straight from China... I recently grabbed a very well used Tokina 300 F2.8 AT-X II to pick up 2 stops waiting for the Unicorn to appear..

Here a few shots from the past few days.  There isn't much info out there on the Tokina, but I am loving it for the price..

I left this one pretty big, shot wide open..

My new favorite non Raptors... Great Crested Flycatcher

My Token Osprey loosing a feather

And a fun shot of a Willet on a cloudy day...

Those are stunning and clean as a whistle.   I would be loving that combo too.   I'm sure what you are doing with the equipment is a large part of it!

Re: Still Loving my D300 after 1 year

Those are some very nice shots you've posted.  I think I like #4 the best.  I got my D300 in April 2008.  5 years!  But someone stole it 3 months ago... which forced my hand.  I was patiently waiting far a "D400" like so many others here, but under the circumstances, I had to buy something to replace the DX beast... so I opted for the the D7100.  The D7100 is very nice and I am happy with it -- and I have ALMOST forgotten about the D300.  But not totally.  It was -- and is -- one helluva camera.  I would still have it today and be happily shooting with it -- if not for the low-life who bashed-in my car window and made off with the rig.  Take your time and enjoy what the D300 can do (and how good it feels in your hand) and don't get caught-up chasing new features and pixels.

Nice shots! I just got one in March. I love it. I don't care that it is old-it is fantastic.

The other shots are good, Kris, but the detail and clarity of this shot is incredible.  Nicely done, sir.

Kinda proves what can be done in a short time when someone takes the time to learn how to use good gear, course having some talent don't hurt either.

Nice work Kris.

Re: Still Loving my D300 after 1 year

Thanks!  The duck is at a rescue facility and was shot through netting.  For a 25? year old lens not remotely made for digital it is performing really well on the D300.  It does have CA/PF that are pretty easily cleaned up in high contrast areas, but not as bad as the older Nikon 300 F4 was when I test drove it last winter..  I like it also because it is pretty easy to shoot handheld.  It is 6 pounds, but I guess I'm just used to it..

I know this is a gear forum, but I'm the oddball.  I can't afford all the newest, latest and greatest toys so I make the most of what I have.  I have less invested in the D300 and the Tokina 300 F2.8 combined than a d7100 body only would cost, so with the savings I can almost pay rent and make car payments

Well done. I just took back my D300 from my niece and gave her my D7000. Love the D300. It's as solid as a tank! Does a fantastic job.

Re: Still Loving my D300 after 1 year

Kris, those are nice shots. I bought a D300 with 23k shutter clicks about a month ago. The camera is built like a brick house and does almost everything except make breakfast. I am very happy with it. I bought a D3200 new about 4 months ago and have relegated it to my backup. Although it is 24 MP and does video, it's like a toy in comparison to the D300. Again, nice shots.

Yeah, its like of a gear thread, but it more of a sharing and information thread.

Amen, to not spending mounts of dollars on gear.  Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a brand new D3x and some really kick putt F2.8 glass.  But like you said, car, home, kids, dog; all must be addressed first.  As for me, I buy used as I can. Though I just bought a 18-200 super zoom as a nice walking around lens and for events I do several times a year for my company.

Anyway, good work and great photos.
