OMD 12mm and Nikon 800 14mm comparison

I did this comparison this morning just for fun and would love to get your comments of any type on this set of pictures. I am a "big-boy" so I can take whatever you want to say. Don't feel obligated to be nice.

The 2 from the Olympus OMD are with a new 12mm lens.  Which style of waterfall picture do you like?  Fast or slow?

The third picture is with a Nikon D800 and a 14mm lens.  Notice the flare in the left bottom corner.  This lens loves to flare.

Prefer the second where you drag the shutter speed. I think I've become accustomed to this look by now.

Nice that you had dim enough light to be able to do this w/o an ND filter, sometimes the E-M5's base 200 ISO gets in the way.

Cheers,

Rick

I agree with Rick, I like the 2nd photo for the same reason that he indicated (slower shutter speed).

Tripod?

My guess is you used a tripod for the slow shutter speeds.  I miss my E-M5 because handheld shots at very slow shutter speeds were so darned easy.

Why compare a Standard wide to an Ultra wide lens?

It's a FAR more demanding design to make a 14mm that covers the full 35mm frame, than it is to design something that's nowhere near as wide a FOV.  A 12mm covering a 4/3 sensor is far less challenging to make.

Yes, and a remote shutter release.

Fair point. You are right.  I started out by comparing the Nikon 24-70 at 24 mm to the Olympus 12mm. I will attach a picture from that lens.  I just wanted to see how that 14mm looked out of curiosity.

I did the same thing and...

I did the same thing recently and more people loved the "Frozen in time" version.

"Flowing smoothly" vs "Frozen in time"

Well, give him $1000 or so to buy the 7mm and I'm sure he'd be happy to do that test for you.

You are right.  More people tend to like the smooth look of the water.  I always liked the stop-motion of individual drops of water, but I'm starting to like the smooth better too.

My wife asked me the same question, and we think the OMD does a better job with more browns.  The Nikon seemed overly green.  However, having said that, it could just be how Lightroom processes Olympus RAW and Nikon RAW when I simply hit the Auto button for tone processing.

Accurate? No idea without being there.

The Oly colour temperature looks warmer, while the Nikon cooler temp looks cooler.

Setting the same temp for both cameras would be a better test.
